IRVING, Texas – Sixth-seeded Centenary College used a seven run sixth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead before holding on to defeat fourth-seeded Schreiner University, 8-5 in game five of the 2022 SCAC Softball Championship on the campus of the University of Dallas on Saturday afternoon. HOW IT HAPPENED
- Centenary broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. After the Ladies put runners on first and second with no one out, two batters later Viviana Rivero drove in Mackenzie Cox with an RBI single to left field.
- In the bottom half of the third, Schreiner threatened when they put runners on first and second with two outs but Centenary starting pitcher Anna Scarbrock got Kennedy Moody to groundout to second to end the inning.
- Haley Pair led off the bottom of the fifth for the Mountaineers with a solo homerun to left field that knotted the game at 1-1.
- The Ladies wasted no time in regaining the lead as they scored seven runs, all with two outs, in the top of the sixth to go up 8-1. The inning was highlighted by a two-run triple from Brooke Sandefur and a three-run homer by Erin Lewis.
- The Mountaineers wasted no time in beginning their comeback attempt as they put runners on second and third with no one out after a Rebecca Gownley double to begin the bottom of the seventh. Moody delievered a run scoring single a few batters later to cut the lead to 8-2 and loaded the bases. One batter later Kaylee Culpepper drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-3. Taci Tatum tallied an RBI sac fly that scored Danielle Pedraza from third. On the ensuing relay, a run-down ensued which allowed Mikayla Briggs to score from second to pull to within 8-5.
