ETHAN MANN OF UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a first-year right-handed pitcher from Southlake, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, April 19 through Sunday, April 25.
Mann tossed two scoreless outings this week and was credited two wins, as the Crusaders went 4-1 this week which included the team taking its first SCAC series of the season. In a non-conference start against Hardin-Simmons, the freshman right-hander threw five innings and scattered five hits to go with a walk and four strikeouts. Mann then pitched 3.1 frames while facing two over the minimum in relief as the Crusaders run-ruled St. Thomas on Sunday to close the series.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore left-hander J.J. Slack of Southwestern continued his recent string of strong performances out of the Pirates' bullpen. In Southwestern's 11-6 win over Austin College, Slack struck out nine in 4.1 innings of work, surrendering just two hits and no walks. Slack retired the first 11 hitters he faced in order with a trio of three-up, three-down innings in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, striking out the side in the fifth. First-year right-hander Chavana of Trinity was credited with two of the Tigers' three victories last week, including one decision on Saturday in the Tigers' SCAC doubleheader sweep of No. 19 Centenary. The Trinity rookie posted a 2.70 ERA between his two relief appearances in which he accounted for 6.2 innings pitched and three strikeouts to just seven hits, earning him his victory over the Gents along with the midweek decision over Texas Lutheran in non-conference action. Sophomore right-hander Brendan Beard of Texas Lutheran tossed the final 2-1/3 innings and picked up the pitching win in the Bulldogs' 11-inning victory over Schreiner. He appeared in relief in the bottom of the ninth with Schreiner's potential winning run standing at second base. Beard ended the Schreiner threat with a strikeout and went on to hold the Mountaineers without a hit for the duration of his appearance. He struck out four and walked one. In his one inning of work earlier in the week, against No. 2 Trinity, he struck out the side. For the week, his strikeouts per nine innings rate was 18.90.
