LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – After exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), the league office today announced its 2013 Women's Outdoor Track & Field postseason awards.
Trinity University's Vanessa Moreno was selected as SCAC Women's Track Athlete-of-the-Year while her teammate Anecia Richardson was voted SCAC Women's Field Athlete-of-the-Year. Trinity's Bailey Drury earned SCAC Women's Track & Field Newcomer-of-the-Year honors.
Moreno, a junior from El Paso, Texas, took first place in the 1,500m run and the 5,000m run at the 2013 SCAC championships. She ran the 15th-fastest time in Division III in the 10,000m during the regular season (36:09.11) and finished 18th in the event at the 2013 NCAA Division III championship meet. Moreno ran personal bests in the 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m this year and is in the top five all-time at Trinity in each of those events. This past fall, she won the SCAC Women's Cross Country championship, and was named conference Cross Country Runner-of-the-Year.
Richardson won the shot put, discus, and hammer and also took third in the javelin throw as she was the high-point scorer and Female Athlete-of-the-Meet at the 2013 SCAC Track & Field championships. Its been a banner year for the freshman from Dallas, who also excelled on the hardwood for the Tigers. Richardson earned SCAC Women's Basketball Newcomer-of-the-Year honors and was also named South Region Rookie-of-the-Year by D3hoops.com.
Drury, a freshman from Tampa, Fla., was the 2013 SCAC champion in the 200m and 400m and was also a member of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. She barely missed school records in both the 200m and 400m dash, but was part of the school-record 4x100 relay team.
In balloting that took place earlier, the SCAC Women's Track & Field Staff-of-the-Year honor was shared by the staffs at Trinity University (head coach Marcus Whitehead) and the University of Dallas (head coach Matt Buchhorn).
