After averaging 16.9 points per game as a sophomore in Centenary’s only season in the American Southwest Conference, Blount has made an immediate impact in the SCAC and leads the league in both points scored (421) and scoring average (21.1) heading into the conference tournament. The junior has scored 25+ points eight times this season, and is the only player in the league to have two 30+ point performances. Blount is also fifth in the SCAC in field goal percentage (47.9%), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (38.1%) and eighth in free throw percentage (73.3%). And despite missing three games this season, he is also seventh in the league in total three-point field goals made (32) and second in made free throws (121).

Blount joins Rose-Hulman’s Bryan Egli, who was named SCAC Player-of-the-Year in 1998-99, as the only players to earn POTY honors in his first team’s season of competition in the conference.

Brett Bell of Centenary earned SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors after averaging 7.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game (second in the SCAC) during the regular season. Bell has scored in double figures seven times on the season and has recorded double-digit rebounds on four occasions, despite suffering an injury in January that caused him to miss five conference games. Bell, who was also a Third Team All-SCAC selection, shot 45.1 percent from the field (51-113) and had 31 assists (third on the team) for the Gents.

An all-conference performer a year ago, Okpala was Austin College’s best on-ball defender this season as evidenced by his 41 steals – good for second in the conference. The junior guard also grabbed 77 rebounds, which was fourth-best on the team. Okpala, the ‘Roos floor leader, was also the team’s most consistent offensive force as he led the team in scoring (10.6 points per game) and three-point field goals (32) while shooting 40.5 percent from beyond the arc during the regular season.

Okpala is the first Austin College men’s player to earn Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors and just the second ‘Roo to win one of the league’s major postseason awards – following Kola Alade who was named SCAC Player-of-the-Year for the 2009-10 season.

Cunningham, in his 14th season with Trinity, has led the Tigers to an 18-7 overall mark, a 12-3 conference record and the No. 1 seed in this year’s conference tournament. This is the fifth time that Cunningham has been honored as the league’s Coach-of-the-Year – the most of any men’s basketball coach in the league’s 22-year history. The winningest men’s basketball coach in Trinity history, Cunningham has amassed a record of 272-113 (.706) while in San Antonio and has guided the Tigers to seven NCAA Division III playoff appearances and five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, including 2012. Trinity stands at 160-57 (.737) in the SCAC under Coach Cunningham’s leadership. In his 26th season as a collegiate head coach, Cunningham, who picked up his 400th career victory last season, sports an overall career mark of 423-276.
