SHREVEPORT, La. – Southwestern University led from beginning to end and captured its first conference women's golf team title since 2009 with a four-shot victory over Trinity University at the 2013 SCAC Women's Golf Championship contested at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, La. The 15th-ranked Pirates posted a two-day total of 659 to narrowly defeat 16th-ranked Trinity, who finished second with a team score of 663. Centenary College finished third with a team score of 676.
The championship is the sixth overall for the Southwestern women's golf program, which is just one off DePauw University's SCAC-best seven women's team titles.
When the first group of women arrived at the tee box at 7:55 a.m., temperatures hovered around 45 degrees, but by the time that same group was making the turn to the back nine, temperatures had reached 60 degrees en route to another beautiful day for golf in Shreveport.
Southwestern was led by a pair of seniors and First Team All-SCAC performers, Karissa Speck and Kesley Coburn. Speck finished second among all individuals for the second consecutive year and shot a two-day total of 163 (83-80). Coburn , who was Second Team All-SCAC in 2012, shot 164 (81-83).
Sophomore Lauren Boone (82-85--167), and freshmen Keeley Coburn (88-81--169) and Bernice Leonard (84-86--170) were all named Second Team All-SCAC.
Trinity's Brigette Lee earned both Women's Golfer-of-the-Year and Freshman-of-the-Year honors, just the second player in conference history (Paige Gooch, DePauw University - 2011) to earn both honors in the same season.
Both Southwestern and Trinity will await word of a NCAA at-large bid when announcements are made on May 6.
