SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University men lead after Day One of the 2013 SCAC Track & Field Championships. Official Website | Live Results
After a very light Day One schedule which saw only two events being contested, the Trinity University men earned 35 points compared to 14 points for Southwestern University and six points for Colorado College.
Trinity's Justin Campbell (pictured above) won his third career indivdiual SCAC Championship, and his first in the hammer throw. He nearly broke the Trinity record for the event with his throw of 44.84 meters, which is the fourth-longest in SCAC Championships history. Trinity has now won back-to-back titles in the men's hammer throw, following Robby Buckreis's championship last season.
Southwestern's duo of Joseph Quintero (30.30 meters) and Owen Cassidy (25.35 meters) finished second and third.
In the men's 10,000 meters, Pancho Escobedo finished in a winning time of 33:13.45 and was All-SCAC for the second straight season, becoming Trinity's first 10K winner since Tom Pillow won back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. Trinity's Taylor Piske (33:19.58) was second to also earn All-SCAC honors, as did Graham Frank of Colorado College (33:33.78). Trinity's Gerardo Hernandez finished fourth overall, and Phillip Flagg and Brandon Douglas capped a strong Trinity performance, as the Tigers took five of the top six spots in the race.
The rest of the events at the SCAC Championships will be held on Saturday, with the first events beginning at 9:00 a.m.
