SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity football family recently lost a true legend, as former Tiger quarterback Roy Hampton '03, passed away in early March.
Hampton guided the Tigers to their first-ever Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl – the NCAA Division III Championship game – in 2002. During that storied campaign, Hampton set Trinity single-season school records in passing touchdowns (43), and total offense yards (4,418). The Tigers went 10-0 in the regular season, and won playoff games against Mary Hardin-Baylor, Washington & Jefferson, Bridgewater, and St. John's (Minn.) to finish 14-1 overall.
That same year, Hampton was selected to three All-America Teams: Hewlett Packard (First Team), D3football.com (First Team), and Football Gazette (Second Team). He was also elected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the year for the second consecutive time. In 2001, Hampton made the Hewlett Packard First Team, the Football Gazette Second Team, and the D3football.com Third Team. His first national honors came in 2000 when Hampton was named to the USA Football Honorable Mention All-America Team.
Hampton was also named to the SCAC 15th Anniversary Football Team.
Ten years after Hampton played for the Tigers, he still holds the career record for passing yards per game (251.5 yards per game), and quarterback efficiency rating (163.4). Hampton is ranked second in six career categories, including passing yards (10,564), passing touchdowns (104), and total offense yards (11,043).
All told, Hampton is the all-time leader in eight school records, and is second in 13 categories.
Hampton earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Trinity in business administration, with a specialty in marketing. A 1998 graduate of Burleson High School, Hampton was the owner of HD Construction in Fort Worth, Texas.
Hampton's survivors include his son Andrew; his parents, Roy Hampton Sr., and Cindy; and brothers Michael, Marcus and John Hampton.
