LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - After starting the season 0-6, Southwestern University has responded by winning four of its last six matches, including two more SCAC games. The Pirates now sit at 4-8 overall and 2-2 in league play and are riding a three game winning streak.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 1-2 last week, topping
Dallas 1-0 before falling 1-0 against Southwestern and 7-0 against
No. 3 Trinity to wrap up the weekend. The ‘Roos are now 4-6-1
overall this season and 2-2 in conference play. Against Dallas,
Ariel Marder tallied the game winner to give the ‘Roos their
second SCAC victory of the season. Against Southwestern, the
‘Roos were unable to get much going offensively in what
became a defensive battle with Austin College owning an 11-9 shot
advantage but surrendering a goal in the 72nd minute. On
Sunday the ‘Roos fell behind early against Trinity and were
unable to recover, getting out-shot 35-5 in the match.
Centenary (3-4-1, 0-3 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week. The
Ladies fell 10-0 to No. 1 Trinity before dropping a 3-0 decision to
Southwestern. Centenary returns to action on Oct. 5 when the Ladies
travel to Dallas for an SCAC contest.
Dallas (8-5, 1-2 SCAC) went 0-3 on the week. The Crusaders
return to action on Oct. 2 and 5 when they host Hardin-Simmons and
Centenary, respectively.
With a weekend sweep of SCAC action, posting shutouts against
Austin College and Centenary, Southwestern
improved to 4-8 on the season and 2-2 in the SCAC. Friday night SU
and AC played 71 minutes of scoreless action before Danielle De Los
Santos punched in the game winner as the Pirates defeated Austin
College 1-0. It was a dominating performance against Centenary that
earned Southwestern the win as SU posted 16 shots while holding
Centenary to five. Two first half goals set the stage for a 3-0
win, completing the weekend sweep. Southwestern has the week off
before returning to action as the second round of SCAC action gets
underway.
No. 1 Trinity posted two road shutouts in SCAC
play this weekend, defeating both Centenary and Austin College by a
combined 17-0 score. The Tigers opened the weekend with a 10-0
shutout at Centenary, which included two different players scoring
hat tricks. Stephanie Segovia scored her fourth career hat trick in
just her second season at Trinity, while Emily Jorgens nailed three
goals for the first time in her career. Segovia reached three goals
first, but Jorgens followed just four minutes later in the second
half of play. On Sunday, Shelby Guenthardt had two goals to lead
Trinity to a 7-0 win over Austin College. Segovia picked up
another goal for her fourth of the weekend, while Jorgens had an
assist to give her three goals and three assists in the two games.
Trinity will face one of its toughest tests this season next
weekend, facing off against fifth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday,
then taking on Loras College on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers return
home October 12, resuming SCAC play against Austin College.
