KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Trinity University women, after posting a 1-0-1 mark over the Labor Day weekend, slipped from fifth to sixth with the release of the first regular season National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Division III top 25 poll.
After a 3-0 shutout of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday evening, the Tigers took on 10th-ranked Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday in an early season top 10 match-up.
Hardin-Simmons got on the board early, scoring in the seventh minute of the game.
Trinity held a slim 4-3 edge on shots in the first period, but could not break through with a goal against the Cowgirls defense. The Tigers' offense revved up even more in the second half, but it wasn't until the 62nd minute that it finally paid off.
After starting the period with an early shot off the post by Trinity's Katy Lipscomb, Kimberly Polasek had a shot on goal that was saved to keep it 1-0. Just a few minutes later, Kelsey Falcone got the Tigers on the board, thanks to an assist from All-American Emily Jorgens.
For Falcone, it was her third goal in two games to start the season. In 23 games as a first-year player in 2011, Falcone had just one goal.
Trinity had three shots against just one for Hardin-Simmons in the two overtime periods, but it was the final shot of the game that held the most drama. Jorgens was able to find space in the final seconds, getting off a shot on goal, but it was saved just before time expired.
