TREY CASTILLO OF MCMURRY UNIVERSITY, a senior midfielder on the men's soccer team from Abilene, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 4.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Throughout his time at McMurry, Trey Castillo has always been more than one of the War Hawks’ best players.

His investments in the team, the university and the Abilene community have been impactful. He does so out of a calling.

“I like to just walk through God pretty much and try to show that through who I am every day,” Castillo said.

Trey is a local scholar-athlete having graduated from Cooper High School in Abilene and his roots continue to produce.

“Trey is the ultimate captain,” said McMurry soccer coach Charles Nobles. ”He leads on and off the field. He is a servant leader with the upmost integrity all while giving back to the community. Trey makes a massive difference in the lives of people he comes in contact with. We are extremely proud of Trey for winning this award and most importantly for the way he represents the program.”

In addition to working and meeting people through his work at HEB and encouraging local youth soccer players, Castillo has taken his role at McMurry seriously. He has multiple Academic All-Conference awards and has one goal in his nine starts on the pitch.

“I would really like to touch on how we've affected the youth like these past four years, because we've gone to elementary schools in the morning and it’s just been a great experience,” said Castillo. “I like to think that I have an effect on those kids, because I remember myself at that age and looking up to people older than me, and especially in my sport, and seeing how they acted and seeing how they were.”

As he winds down his playing career, Castillo is reflective of his reputation and who he represents.

“Coach Lorenzo (Segura) told me good things will happen if you work as hard as you can,” said Castillo. “And that's one thing I plan to carry on just in the future. I've enjoyed every single year I've had to play the sport that I love and I thank God for every opportunity that I've been given.”
