GARLAND, Texas -- The 17th-ranked Trinity University women picked up four wins and extended its lead to over 200 points over Colorado College heading into the final day of the 2025 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Trinity leads with 754 points while Colorado College is in second with 527 points. Southwestern sits in third with 371 points.
Colorado College earned a victory on the 3-meter board early Friday afternoon when the Tigers' Emma Krasemann captured her second consecutive title in the event. The senior took gold with a NCAA 'B' cut score of 430 points. She is the ninth diver in league history to earn back-to-back titles on the 3-meter board and the first since Trinity's Katarina Partalas in 2021 and 2022. Krasemann's teammate, Keller Pooley, gave the program its first-ever 1-2 finish in the event as Pooley secured silver with a score of 410 points - also good for a NCAA 'B' cut. Following the ceremony to honor the league's 29 seniors, Trinity continued to distance itself from the competition, taking top honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay to open the evening session. The quartet of Allison Ortiz, Rachel Brown, Julia Carter, and Amy Benson touched the wall first in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:34.89 - the fifth-fastest time in SCAC championship meet history. It was the Tigers' third straight win in the event, fifth in the past six years and the program's 11th event championship in program history. As the evening's program shifted back to individual competition, Trinity's Allison Ortiz took her first career individual gold by touching first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.79. Ortiz, who finished third in the event as a freshman a year ago, became the sixth different Trinity swimmer to win the event. Finishing in second was Niva Maskey of Southwestern, who clocked a time of 58.47, and Alyssa Tunggal of Colorado College rounded out the all-SCAC team with a third place finish in a time of 58.57. 100-Yard Butterfly Interview
Trinity's Neely Burns, the defending national champion in the 400 IM, earned her third consecutive win in the event at the SCAC meet, touching the wall in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:21.36 - just behind her conference meet record she set a year ago (4:21.15). The victory made her just the fourth different swimmer to win the 400 IM three times in a career and the first to win three straight since former Trinity swimmer Christine Jayne took top honors in the event four consecutive years from 1999 to 2002. She is the league's first female swimmer to enter the pool to swim an event as its defending national champion and just the second all-time following Stephen Culbertson of Trinity, who won the 100 free national title as a junior in 2014, before returning to the conference meet the following year. The 200-yard freestyle saw another Trinity sweep as Amy Benson established both a new SCAC championship and open mark, touching first in 1:50.88, which was also good for an NCAA 'B' cut. She is the ninth swimmer in league history to win the event in back-to-back seasons and her victory marked the 13th-consecutive year a Trinity swimmer has taken gold in the 200 free. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Colorado College's Malia Hewitt broke through with a victory after a second place finish in the event in 2023 and a third place finish last season. The junior won the race to the wall and clocked a winning time of 1:05.52 for her first career conference meet victory. Hannah Waddell of Centenary finished second in a time of 1:07.25, charting the program's first all-conference performance since Maddie Vacula took top honors in the 1,650 freestyle at the 2023 championships. The night's final event saw Southwestern's Ellie Samples win her first career gold, earning top honors in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 57.71. The individual win was the first for a Southwestern female swimmer since Jesse Stoval took gold in the 100 free at the 2022 championships and she became just the fourth Pirate to win the 100 back in program history, following Jessica Lovorn (2005), Sarah Ayers (2011) and Emma Frey (2022).
