Nathanael Schraeder, Concordia University (Texas), Baseball - Character & Community

NATHANAEL SCHRAEDER OF CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (TEXAS), a first-year pitcher on the baseball team from Austin, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 20.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Nathanael, who plans to major in Religious Education, has already made a significant impact both on and off the baseball field, embodying the values of leadership, community, and faith that define the CTX experience. In this interview, Nathanael shares the reasons he chose CTX to pursue his academic and athletic dreams.

“I chose CTX because of the community here,” Nathanael says. “I have lots of friends who have been here, and I’ve heard just great things about the school. The class sizes really stood out to me as well. I enjoy being in smaller classes and being able to connect with the teachers and other students. Playing baseball here has always been a goal of mine, and that was another big reason I chose CTX.”

Being a student-athlete at CTX has shaped Nathanael’s approach to leadership. “I think being here at Concordia has taught me to have integrity in different ways,” he explains. “Whether it’s being on time, always putting in effort in everything I do, or being an example to those around me.”

Nathanael’s transition to college life has been eased by the support of his coaches and teammates. “My coaches and teammates have been really welcoming,” he shares. “As a freshman on the team, they’ve made me feel like I’m part of the team already. The seniors, in particular, have been great leaders and role models for me.”

Beyond the baseball diamond, Nathanael is deeply involved in campus ministry and community-building activities. “Here at Concordia, we have chapel and refuge, which is a student-led ministry, and I’ve been leading in those as well as playing in the worship band,” he says. “On the baseball team, we’ve started a Bible study together, and that has been really great. It’s about having that community and growing together—not just on the field, but in class and across campus.”

When asked how he defines leadership, Nathanael’s response reflects his servant-hearted philosophy. “I think leadership is being a servant to those around you,” he says. “The leaders on our team have always modeled that—not acting like they’re too good to do smaller jobs and always leading by example. That’s been a big part of our team’s culture.”

Nathanael’s first year at Concordia University Texas has been marked by growth, community, and a commitment to his faith. Whether it’s through baseball, ministry, or academics, he continues to embrace opportunities to lead.
