SCAC Volleyball Week 7 Recap - BSC & Southwestern Post Perfect Marks In SCAC Central/West Divisional

SUWANEE, Ga. -  The Birminham-Southern Panthers and 16th ranked Southwestern Pirates posted 4-0 records and the SCAC Central/West Divisional, hosted by Birmingham-Southern Oct. 11-12. With their four wins, the Pirates extended their win streak to eight matches.

The Austin College volleyball team went 3-2 over the course of the week, improving to 14-10 on the year and moving within two wins of reaching 500 in program history. The team started the week with a 3-2 road victory against the University of Texas-Dallas and then split its matches at the SCAC Crossover in Birmingham, topping Hendrix and Rhodes by 3-0 scores but falling 3-2 to Birmingham-Southern and 3-0 to Trinity. Jordan Anderton had a solid week for the 'Roos, averaging 9.89 assists and 1.89 digs per game with a hitting percentage of .312 in the five matches. Anderton had a high of 55 assists against UTD. Jessica Rose also had a strong showing, averaging team-bests of 2.95 kills and 4.79 digs per game.  Gloria Carey added 4.11 digs per game, and Chitra Kavouspour added 2.54 kills and 2.54 digs per game. This week the ‘Roos head to Georgetown for the final SCAC Crossover of the season.
 
The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team had a great weekend at home, hosting the SCAC Central/West Divisional and going 4-0 with wins over Colorado College and Austin College, Saturday, both by scores of 3-2. On Saturday, the Panthers defeated No. 3 Trinity and Millsaps, both in three sets. Junior setter Milica Stojanovic posted double-doubles (assists-digs) in all four matches, and junior outside hitter had double-doubles (kills-digs) in three of the four matches. BSC is at home again this Friday at 6 p.m. against Lee University in Bill Battle Coliseum.

Centre was idle last week. The Colonels (12-12, 3-4 SCAC) return to the court Wednesday, Oct. 15 when they travel to Maryville, Tenn. to take on the Maryville Scots. Centre then jumps right back into SCAC play when they compete at the SCAC East vs. West crossover hosted by Southwestern Oct. 17-18.

Colorado College Sophomore middle blocker Emily Perkins averaged 3.43 kills, 3.33 digs and 0.53 blocks per game during four matches at the SCAC crossovers at Birmingham-Southern. She posted the first of three double-doubles with 13 kills and 11 digs in the Tigers' five-set loss to the host Panthers, then had another with 18 kills and 17 digs in a four-set loss to No. 16 Southwestern University. Perkins also had 13 kills and 15 digs in a three-set victory over Millsaps. She also had 12 kills and 11 digs as CC began its week with a sweep of Division II Colorado School of Mines. Perkins leads the Tigers in points (350), kills (287), hitting percentage (.284) and blocked shots (13-40-53). The Tigers evened their record against Division II opponents at 1-1 with a three-set victory over the Colorado School of Mines. CC dropped to 1-3 in five-set matches. 15 of Colorado College's 19 victories have been in three sets.

DePauw dropped to 17-8 on the season after dropping a 3-1 decision to Division II Southern Indiana and a 3-2 contest to Indiana Wesleyan. Against Southern Indiana, Adrienne Cobb paced the Tigers with 14 kills and eight blocks, while Ali Smith had 29 assists. Emily Smith led DePauw with 34 digs, while Kate Carrico added 21. DePauw dropped the first two sets to Indiana Wesleyan, but battled back to force a fifth set before losing. Erin Cunningham led the Tigers with 14 kills, while Katey Larson added 13 with Loren Sloan and Dana Genet each adding 12. Ali Smith led DePauw with 41 assists with Emily Smith totaling 30 digs. Kristen Chynoweth led the Tigers with seven blocks and Larson followed with six.

The Hendrix volleyball team suffered four losses this weekend at the SCAC Central vs. West Crossover.  Hendrix falls to 8-19 overall and 1-10 in SCAC contests.  Warriors' sophomore outside hitter Kim Larson tallied a team-high 13 kills in the Warriors' 3-0 losses to Austin College and Colorado College at host Birmingham Southern College on Saturday.  Larson collected seven kills and 10 digs against the Roos and five kills against the Tigers.  Warriors' first year setter Ashley Skinner added 17 assists on the day, while sophomore libero Sara Gawor posted 23 digs in the two matches.  Hendrix opened Sunday's action with a 3-0 loss to Southwestern University before losing 3-0 to Rhodes College in the nightcap.  Hendrix first year middle blocker Francis Bowen led the team with 11 kills on the day, while Gawor collected 31 digs in the two matches.  Skinner tallied a team-high 19 assists on Sunday.

Millsaps (12-17, 3-8 SCAC) had its toughest outing to date in the SCAC Central/West Divisional hosted by Birmingham-Southern. Facing some of the top teams in the conference, the team had many bright moments. One of those moments came in the second set against 7th-ranked Trinity University, as the team picked up a 25-23 win. Another bright spot came against another nationally ranked team, as the Majors went five-sets with 16th-ranked Southwestern University.  Millsaps hung tough with the Lady Pirates and came up short in a 3-2 loss. Leading the team in the tournament was sophomore Kate Hall with 40 kills, seven service aces, six blocks and 17 digs. Maggie Tumminello also had a strong showing with 24 kills and 58 digs. Leading the way defensively for Millsaps was Dixie Krauss who had 73 digs, while Mallory Clark rounded out a solid defensive showing with 39 digs. The ladies will host the last two home matches of the 2008 season this weekend, welcoming Belhaven to town Friday for Senior Night at 7 p.m. They will wrap up their home slate on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Huntingdon College.

The Oglethorpe volleyball team won their only match of the week with a 3-0 sweep over Spelman College. With the victory, the Petrels earned their eighth win of the season and the team will get set to travel to Georgetown, Texas for this upcoming weekend's SCAC Cross. 

Rhodes went 1-3 this weekend at the SCAC Central/West Divisional hosted by Birmingham Southern.  The Lynx dropped their first two matches of the weekend to Trinity and Southwestern. Libero Kayla McCrury had 37 digs to lead the Lynx while Stephanie Parazak led the Lynx with 12 kills.  On Day 2, Rhodes dropped their opening match to Austin College. Katherine Delavan had 8 kills for the Lynx while Kayla McCrury had 23 digs. The Lynx picked up their first win against Hendrix College.  Outside Hitter Katherine Delavan led the Lynx with 11 kills and 7 digs.

Sewanee was idle last week. The Tigers (3-13, 0-7 SCAC) will travel to Southwestern University Oct. 17-18 for the SCAC East/West Crossover in Georgetown, Texas. Sewanee will take on Colorado College, Trinity, Oglethorpe and Southwestern.

No. 16 Southwestern improved to 20-3 on the season, with a 4-0 record at the SCAC West/Central Cross. The Pirates started the weekend with a 3-0 win over Rhodes followed by a tough fought 3-2 victory over Millsaps. In the two matches, the team was lead at the net offensively and defensively by middle blockers, Lauren Brown and Lindsay Thompson. The pair combined for 40 kills and 14 blocks.  On Sunday, Southwestern had a strong 3-0 win over Hendrix followed by a 3-1 victory against Colorado College. Danielle Bochat turned in a strong performance in both matches with 21 kills, 26 digs, and 3 aces on the day. Several players had strong matches against Colorado College; Audra Gentry, Thompson, and Brown had 15, 12, and 12 kills respectively while libero Samantha Lingamfelter turned in 27 digs as setter Christina Nicholls added 47 assists. The Pirates return home for their final regular season conference matches as they host the SCAC West/East Cross Divisional.

No. 7 Trinity had another successful week of play, finishing with a 4-1 overall record.  The Tigers defeated Concordia (TX) University on Wednesday, then traveled to Birmingham-Southern College for two days of SCAC play. Trinity beat Millsaps and Rhodes on the opening day, then fell to Birmingham-Southern to start day two. The loss to Birmingham-Southern was Trinity's only defeat of the weekend, which came to a team that has beaten numerous ranked teams - including second-ranked Emory. The finale was a playoff rematch with Austin College, and the Tigers took the match 3-0. The Tigers improve to 20-7 on the season, as well as a 10-0 record in SCAC play. Trinity remains atop the SCAC standings with the strong weekend and are the only SCAC team left without a conference loss. Megan Dudley led the team with 61 kills over the last week, also finishing second with 71 digs. Tayler Malloy, recently returned from injury, hit over .400 for the second straight tournament, coming in with a blistering .448 hitting percentage last week.  She also tied for second with 12 blocks last week. Trinity will return to SCAC action this weekend in Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers will face Oglethorpe and Sewanee on the first day, followed by Centre and Colorado College on the second. Trinity can clinch the SCAC Tournament's top seed with four wins this weekend.
