Women's Soccer Recap (Week 7) - Rhodes Climbs to into the Top Fifteen in the Nation at Number Twelve

SUWANEE, Ga. - Behind great play from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Becca Clarin, Rhodes fought its way to two tough 1-0 road conference victories. The Lynx now find themselves on top of the SCAC and ranked number twelve in the nation - the highest a Rhodes team has ever been ranked in the history of the program.

Rhodes defeated both Centre College and DePauw University by scores of 1-0. The Lynx scored early against Centre when Melanie Sharry found the net, and were able to battle the rest of the way to get the result despite playing with only 10 players for more than 30 minutes in the 2nd half due to an ejection handed out to Sharry the goal scorer. Against DePauw, the game played out differently but would end with the same result. The game winning goal would come late in the second half when Diana Buss headed in a cross from Allison Price. The Rhodes Women’s Soccer team improves to 10-2-1 on the season and 6-1 in the SCAC. Rhodes will not play week this weekend but will travel to Washington University (MO) and Maryville University (MO) on the weekend of Oct. 25th.

Trinity earned a pair of SCAC wins over the weekend, blanking Oglethorpe on Friday and then edging Sewanee in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon. On Friday night against Oglethorpe, Danika Wright and Alex Leamy scored first-half goals to push Trinity to a 2-0 lead at halftime. Jordan Azar and Chelsea Wilson had two goals each in the second half to make it a 6-0 final. Leamy added two second-half assists, while Wright and Allyson Thrall also assisted on goals in the second half.  Allyson Hunter had an assist in the first half as well.  Defensively, Trinity did not allow a shot for the second consecutive game. On Sunday, Trinity and Sewanee squared off in a crucial SCAC matchup between two of the top teams in the SCAC standings.  Sewanee took the early lead with a goal in the eighth minute, then scored early in the second to make it 2-0. Trinity went all out to find the net over the final 30 minutes, finally converting on a penalty kick with just over 20 minutes left. The TU Tigers then scored again with 5:03 remaining to tie the game, and most involved thought overtime was on its way. Trinity, however, had other plans, scoring again with 3:04 to play to complete an action-packed victory. Trinity will host defending NCAA Division III champion Wheaton (IL) College on Saturday night. The Tigers lost 2-0 to Wheaton last season in Illinois.

Southwestern stretched their winning streak to six last weekend, rolling past Sewanee 3-1 and Oglethorpe 3-0. Against Sewanee, the Tigers started out strong but had a hard time penetrating the defensive line of Sarah Holifield, Madi Stachura and Berkeley Mengwasser, who held their opponents only two out of twelve shots on target. Only four minutes into the second, Danielle Madison opened up the scoring, followed shortly therafter by Casey Grier and Laura Kromann for the 3-1 win. Facing Oglethorpe, after a scoreless first half, A.J. Andreola knocked in three shots -- two unassisted -- in only twelve minutes for a hat trick, her first.

Millsaps was outshot in the contest 21-6 (8-1 on goal) and couldn’t find the offense in either period. Two first half goals from BSC proved to be more than enough, with Claire Hooten adding two more late. Senior GK Elizabeth Sooby picked up three saves and surrendered all four goals, while sophomore Sarah Nelin played the final 7:15 in net and grabbed a save. Millsaps will play one match this weekend during Fall Break, traveling to Memphis, Tenn. to face NAIA opponent Crichton College.
