DANVILLE, KY. - In the first round of the
NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament the #15 Centre
College Colonels lost a thriller to visiting Averett University,
76-71, on Friday, March 6, at host Centre College in Danville, Ky.

Nothing seemed to go right in the first half for the Colonels as
Averett quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead by the 12:00
minute mark. Centre went into halftime trailing Averett by 13,
35-22. In the first half the Colonels were a dismal 6 for 22
(27.3%) from the field and 3 for 15 (20.0%) from behind the
three-point line.
Inspired play from the Colonels in the second half slowly but
surely cut the Averett lead to single digits at the 12:49 minute
mark. At the 2:34 minute mark a lay-up by senior guard T.C.
Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) gave Centre its only lead of the game,
65-64, and momentum seemed to be on the Colonels side. But the
Colonels' lead was short lived thanks to an Averett free-throw and
a three pointer after an offensive rebound to give Avertt a 68-65
lead with only minutes to go in the game. Despite numerous heroic
attempts to get back the lead, Centre lost to Averett, 76-71.
In the loss senior T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) scored a
game-high 21 points and recorded 7 rebounds. Thomason finishes his
career at Centre only four points shy of the 1,000 point club and a
two-time All-SCAC selection. Junior forward Danny Noll (Ft.
Mitchell, Ky.) scored 20 points and senior guard Ryan Crowdis
(Louisville, Ky.) scored 12 points and pulled down 5 rebounds.
Despite the loss to Averett University, the 2008-09 season was a
success for the Centre College men's basketball team. During the
2008-09 season Centre posted its third straight 20-plus win season
as well as winning its second SCAC Tournament Championship in three
years. It should also be noted that this years senior class has now
more wins, 93, than any other class in Centre basketball history.
