SUWANEE, Ga. - The Birmingham-Southern College Panthers, riding a six-game winning streak, improved to 8-2 overall during the week of February 23 through March 1. In the Western Division, the Hendrix College Warriors climbed to within one game of division leading Millsaps College.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin went 1-2 on the week, beating LeTourneau
11-8 in non conference action and then dropping a pair of Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference games to Southwestern, 14-9 and 7-5.
The ‘Roos stand at 5-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Leading Austin last week was junior outfielder Jordan Robison, who
hit .667 (8-for-12) with eight runs scored, a home run and three
RBI. He also posted a .917 slugging percentage, an on base
percentage and stole three bases during the week. Austin steps out
of conference play to face Texas-Tyler mid week and then has a
three-game set against conference rival Millsaps March 7-8.
Birmingham-Southern (8-2) got one on the road and
a pair of wins at home this weekend to extend their current streak
to five. They defeated in-state rival Huntingdon College
twice, once in Montgomery on Friday, 13-1, in a rain shortened
seven inning game and again in Birmingham on Saturday, 6-1. In
between, the Panthers took on and bested Wabash College 8-2 earlier
on Saturday. Friday's game was called in the top of the seventh,
the Panthers had bases loaded with no outs and had already scored
eight runs in the inning before the umpires called the game due to
rain. The second scheduled game with Wabash on Sunday was
cancelled due to snow. The Panthers will continue their home
stand this weekend as they host Greenville College and Capital
University for weekend round-robin.
Centre had three games cancelled last week due to
inclement weather. The Colonels will try and get games in this week
against Maryville (Tenn.), Earlham, and Defiance. Centre currently
stands at 0-2 on the young season.
DePauw improved to 4-2 on the season after taking
three of four over the weekend. The Tigers opened the home portion
of their schedule with Saturday's sweep of Anderson. DePauw won the
opener by a 12-4 score and took the nightcap, 8-4. Rob McPike
banged out four of DePauw's 17 hits, while Jon Newman added three
followed by two each from Justin Weiner, Taylor Hoffman, Mike Stout
and Ben Gardner. Hoffman and Stout each homered in the win. Gardner
collected three hits in game two, while Weiner and Jon Newman each
had two. Mike Peterson scattered four hits in six innings while
striking out seven in improving to 1-1. DePauw defeated
Transylvania by an 8-5 score in the opener of Sunday's twin bill,
but dropped the nightcap, 6-5. Hoffman, Stout and McPike each
collected two hits and David Morefield picked up his first win of
the year. The Pioneers scored one in the bottom of the ninth to
take game two, but Weiner collected three hits in the win. For the
week, the Tigers hit .317 and held the opposition to just .247.
Gardner hit .538 and Weiner .421. Weiner stole eight bases with
Gardner adding four as DePauw stole 19 as a team.
Hendrix split its SCAC two-game series at Trinity over the weekend with a 10-8 win on Saturday and 15-3 loss on Sunday. The Warriors improved to 6-7 on the year and 4-3 in league action. Hendrix sophomore 1B Jeff Forgerson blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning and went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI to lead the Warriors past Trinity on Saturday. First year 2B Clark Sims tagged an RBI single to left and first year 3B Kyle Raskin hammered a one-run double to center before junior SS Matt Gaglio pushed Sims across with a grounder to the shortstop. Warriors' sophomore LHP Jordan Suydam held Trinity scoreless until the sixth inning when the Tigers plated two runs on two hits. Suydam struck out four and walked just one over six innings for his first win of the season and improved to 1-1 on the year. Trinity scored seven runs on just three hits in the bottom of the second inning and notched a 15-3 win over Hendrix to split the two-game weekend series on Sunday.
No. 14 Millsaps (12-1, 4-1 SCAC) won its opening game of the Rhodes College Classic over Emory University, 13-2 in seven innings, before having the final two scheduled games snowed out. Sophomore Tony Malaschak led an offensive explosion with a 4-for-5 day and a pair of RBIs and five other Majors had multiple hits. The game was called after seven innings, as sophomore Aaron Williams earned his second complete game win of the year after scattering two runs off nine hits and seven strikeouts. In the victory, Williams lowered his ERA to a 3.86 after four consecutive solid outings. The Majors will play Belhaven on Tuesday of this week before welcoming Austin College to town for a three-game series at Twenty Field March 7-8. All four games will offer live video and live stats.
Oglethorpe won its only game of the week in extra innings over LaGrange College, 9-8. The Petrels were down 7-2 in the fifth inning, but mounted the comeback, tying the game in the sixth inning. Then in the bottom of the 10th, Matthew Cornwell started a two-out rally with a double down the right field line. J.J. Rizzo stepped to the plate and stroked the game-winning RBI single to left. For the first half of the game, the Petrels had base runners all over the place, but had no hits to show for it. They scored two runs in the first on no hits, and their first hit in the game came in the fifth inning, on what was their 10th man to reach base safely. Daniel Sarisky picked up the win in relief, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs on one walk and four strikeouts. Andy Farrey had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, as did Matthew Cornwell, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. The win pulls the Petrels record to 5-5.
Rhodes went 1-1 in the Rhodes College Classic, with a 7-5 victory over LaGrange on Friday and lost to Emory 12-2 on Saturday morning. Sunday's game against Millsaps was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Lynx were led by Senior SS J.R. Bizzell hit .625 (5-8) on the week with two doubles, 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored and stole a base. Senior RF Mason Mosby hit .667 (4-6) with a triple, double, RBI, run scored, and two walks. Sophomore catcher Chris Conkell was 3-6 on the week with an RBI and a walk. Rhodes will return to action this weekend against Denison University and Marietta College. Rhodes will play Denison on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and also play Marietta on Saturday morning.
Sewanee had a weekend series with Blackburn cancelled last weekend due to inclement weather. The Tigers are scheduled to take the field in Atlanta on March 6 taking on Emory. They then return home to the Mountain on Sunday, March 8 when they host Dubuque for a double header. Sewanee currently is 1-3 overall.
Southwestern went 2-1 this week and 2-0 in conference play. The Pirates fell at UT Dallas on Tuesday 10-4 despite out hitting the Comets. The first inning is where most of the action happened with SU scoring four in the top and UTD following with six in the bottom half of the inning. The Comets tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Over the weekend the Pirates returned to conference action with two games at Austin College. Southwestern posted five runs in the eleventh inning to defeat the ‘Roos in Saturday's game. Second baseman Nate Shipp had a monster of a game for the Pirates, going 5-6 with five RBI's and scoring four times. The Pirates continued their winning ways on Sunday, taking game two 7-5. Austin scored first in the second inning, but SU responded with four runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. The ‘Roos comeback in the eighth fell two runs short.
Trinity went 2-1 last week, including a weekend series split in SCAC action at home against Hendrix College. Trinity opened the week with a 7-6 win at Schreiner on Tuesday afternoon, then opened a two-game weekend series with a 10-8 loss to Hendrix. On Sunday, needing a win for the split, Trinity pounded out 15 runs on 11 hits through six innings on offense to take a 15-3 win. Nick Pappas led the team with a .556 batting average, collecting three doubles among his five hits, scoring five runs, and driving in three more. He also drew four walks in the three games and held an on-base percentage of .667 for the week. Jordan Pennington kept his hitting streak alive, starting the season by hitting safely in all 13 games this year. Dating back to last year, Pennington has now hit safely in 20 consecutive games. That is the longest streak since current assistant coach ended his career on a 42-game hitting streak during the 2004 season. Trinity will face off against Concordia (TX) University on Tuesday afternoon, then will take on DeSales University on Thursday. The weekend will bring a a two-game weekend series in the SCAC at Southwestern University. The Tigers were 1-2 against Concordia last year, but beat Southwestern three out of four games in SCAC play in 2008. Trinity swept two games last year against DeSales, winning 9-2 and 21-7.
