Women's Soccer Recap (Week 10) - Rhodes atop the SCAC; Clinches NCAA Tournament Birth

SUWANEE, Ga. - Rhodes College, who won the initial Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title back in 1991 is back on top again for the first time since. The Lynx, who are guaranteed a share of the conference title headed into the the final weekend of regular season matches, will make its first trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Austin College women’s soccer team topped Hendrix College on Friday but fell to conference leading Rhodes College on Sunday in its final two home matches of the season. The ’Roos head into the final weekend of the year with a 9-7-1 overall record and 3-4 mark in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Shelley Casey scored less than six minutes into the game against Hendrix and the ’Roos would never look back, adding late goals by Paige Rutherford and Annie Gunter to make it a 3-0 final. Kaitlin Elledge stopped four shots on her way to securing the shutout. Against Rhodes the ’Roos had several strong offensive chances, including three shots that hit the post, but were unable to put any shots into the back of the net on their way to a 3-0 defeat. Austin College out-shot the Lynx 14-9 in the game. This weekend the ’Roos will be closing out the season with a road trip to Atlanta and Tennessee, where they will face Oglethorpe and Sewanee on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Birmingham-Southern swept the final home series of the 2008 season over the weekend at BSC Soccer Park. Friday’s 3-1 match with Sewanee was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to gain much momentum. BSC had the one-goal lead at the half, but no one at the pitch thought that was a safe lead. The Tigers never let up and it was not until deep in the second half that the Panthers got their third goal to seal the victory. Sunday’s 4-1 game was steadier. Oglethorpe scored first, but the Panthers struck-back quickly and rattled off three more before time was called to ice the victory. Southern will close out the 2008 campaign on the road next weekend in Memphis on Friday and then in Conway, Arkansas on Sunday. They will take on the Rhodes Lynx at noon on Friday afternoon and then the Hendrix Warriors at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Centre defeated Maryville College 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Danville. As it was Senior Day, the event was made even more special when senior, Erin Menard, scored her 58th career goal – placing her in the top five for SCAC all-time leading goal scorers. Centre also earned their 5th shut-out of the year. Centre's final matches of the regular season will be this Friday and Sunday when they face Trinity and Southwestern at home.

DePauw held a 2-0 lead at Rose-Hulman on the strength of goals from Abby Gerwin and Kristen McMahon, but the Engineers' Molly Richardson scored a hat trick in a span of 8:05 for the win. McMahon and Emelie Johansson delivered DePauw's two scores in the 7-2 loss to the defending Division III champions.

Hendrix College split a pair of road games this weekend. The Warriors lost an SCAC match-up against Austin College, 3-0, on Friday night and pulled out a 1-0 victory over University of Dallas on Sunday. Hendrix is now just one game back from .500 as they sit at 7-8 overall and 1-7 in conference action. The Warriors tallied 10 shots and four on-goal, compared to Austin’s 19 shots and eight on-goal. Hendrix junior forward Kate Burnett’s second goal of the season proved to be the game-winner at University of Dallas on Sunday. Burnett put the Warriors on top, 1-0, with an unassisted goal during the 55th minute. The Hendrix defense posted its fifth shutout with the win as they allowed the Lady Crusaders just four shots and two on-goal. Burnett tallied four shots on the day, while senior forward Michelle Story led the team with seven shots and five on-goal. Junior Abby Blaney narrowly missed a goal as she hit the post on one of her two shots on-goal. The Warriors outshot the Lady Crusaders 19-4 and won the corner kick battle, 12-3.

Seniors Erin Sanford and Bobbi Jones were credited with the assist. Senior GK Elizabeth Sooby had a combined 14 saves and allowed three goals to fall to 12-6 overall this season. Millsaps will play its final two games this weekend on the road, traveling to Hendrix and Rhodes. Both contests will be webcasted at www.atwsportscast.com. The Majors need one win to tie a school record of 13 wins in a season and two to set a new school record of 14 wins.

Oglethorpe lost to Millsaps 1-0 this past Friday and to Birmingham-Southern 4-1 on Sunday. With the results, Oglethorpe is now 4-10 for the season and will get set to host Austin College and Dallas this coming weekend to close out the season. On Sunday versus Austin, Oglethorpe will be celebrating Senior Day and the careers of Jamie Dillon, Julie Vaughan, Alix Stalnaker, Kira Carr and Amanda Carpenter.

No. 17 Rhodes traveled to Texas where they shutout The University of Dallas by a score of 2-0 and blanked Austin College by a score of 3-0 clinching at least a share of the 2008 SCAC Women’s Soccer Championship Title and the SCAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Rhodes won the first ever SCAC championship in 1991 and have not won the title since. The NCAA Tournament berth is the first in the program’s history. Against Dallas on Friday the Lynx did not allow a shot and got goals from Allison Price and Kara Purdy to secure their 10th shutout of the season. The Lynx followed up that performance earning their 11th shutout of the season on Sunday against Austin by a score of 3-0. Kara Purdy scored for the Lynx in the 1st half but before halftime the Lynx would be down to 10 players when goalkeeper Becca Clarin was ejected for handling the ball outside of the penalty area being judged to be the last defender by the referee. Playing with 10 players in the second half Rhodes got goals from Cat Rickenbacker and Lizzie Wright to give the Lynx the win. Rhodes will end the regular season this weekend at home against Birmingham Southern and Millsaps. Rhodes won the programs only meeting against Birmingham Southern in 2007 by a score of 1-0 in Birmingham and the Lynx lead the series with Millsaps 16-0-2. In 2007, Millsaps played the Lynx to a scoreless tie in Jackson. In their previous meeting in Memphis, Rhodes won by a score of 4-0.

Sewanee rallied on Sunday with a 3-0 shutout if Millsaps after falling to Birmingham-Southern 3-1 on Friday night. Sewanee senior Audrey Jernigan scored a goal in each contest and Virginia Zakas got both starts in goal. Sewanee is now 9-5-1 and is 5-3 in the league. The Tigers will face Dallas and Austin College on the Mountain next weekend to close out the 2008 season.

Southwestern took down the Trinity Tigers on Saturday, their first win against the team since 2005. While Trinity quickly took the lead in the 12th minute, freshman forward Maria Pollifrone struck back with two goals in four minutes' time to give the Pirates an edge, both thanks to assists from Danielle Madison. The win places the Bucs in a three-way tie for second in the conference.

Trinity lost just its second SCAC game of the season on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 at Southwestern University. Trinity took the early lead on a goal by Brianna Young, but Southwestern scored twice in the first six minutes of overtime to pull off the win – which marks just the second win by Southwestern over Trinity in SCAC play. The Tigers will finish off the regular season on the road at Centre College on Friday, and then at DePauw University on Sunday afternoon. Last season in San Antonio, Trinity blanked DePauw 2-0, then had to settle for a 1-1 tie against Centre.
