Football Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Trinity University continued its SCAC home winning streak by outlasting DePauw, in a shootout, 45-32 on Saturday, October 18. Millsaps College entered the top-10 this week with a 38-17 home win over Sewanee. 

For the third straight week, the Austin College football team used a big second half to pick up a victory as the 'Roos outscored Birmingham-Southern 28-13 after the break on their way to a 48-29 road victory.  The 'Roos rushed for 363 yards and piled up 489 total yards of offense, led by Ross Hasten's 17 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns.  Hasten also caught a 39 yard touchdown pass in the game, and Zach Mamot rushed for 36 yards and a pair of scores.  Matt Burton added a rushing touchdown, giving the team five scores on the ground.  Andy Braly connected on 6-of-8 passes for 126 yards and a score and added 62 yards on the ground.  Matt Finke swung the momentum for the 'Roos late in the second quarter when he blocked a field goal and then scooped up the loose ball and returned it 60 yards for the score, his second defensive touchdown of the season.  This Saturday the 'Roos will put their SCAC best rushing attack up against the top rated SCAC rushing defense in Rhodes when they take on the Lynx for Homecoming.

Birmingham-Southern was at home this week against Austin College and lost its fifth straight game, losing to the 'Roos 48-29. The Panthers led for much of the first half after scoring first less than two minutes into the game. BSC kept the lead until the end of the second quarter, when Austin pulled ahead 20-16 and would never trail again. The Panthers did manage to cut the lead to five in the third quarter, 27-22, but the 'Roos scored three more touchdowns and BSC scored only one more, and Austin picked up the 48-29 win.

Centre will return to action this Saturday against Birmingham Southern following a bye week last week. The Colonels, currently 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC,  are 6-1 in games following a bye week including a 24-17 win over the Panthers last season on the road. This will be only the fifth meeting between the two schools with Centre owning a 3-1 series lead. The game will also be played as part of Centre's Homecoming. The Colonels won last year's Homecoming game 27-0 over Rhodes.

Sophomore linebacker Shane Strom set a Colorado College record by returning a fumble 96 yards for a touchdown at Rhodes. It was also the longest return of a turnover in school history. Strom also set career highs with three solo tackles and six total tackles, including a shared tackle for lost yardage, in his first action of the season other than special teams and blocked a field goal attempt at the end of the first half to keep the Tigers within seven points. Ian Rivero had two tackles for lost yards to move up to eighth place on CC's career list. The junior defensive end also ranks fourth in career sacks with 15 and needs just one more to move into a three-way tie for second place. Sophomore defensive lineman Alpha Anders had a career eight tackles, including 1.5 for lost yards and a sack. He shared the team lead with senior linebackers Buddy Ferreira and Josh Underwood. Freshman defensive back Mike Box had a season-high seven solo tackles. Junior fullback Sean Farrell tied his career high with 25 carries. Colorado College will travel to DePauw University next Saturday before returning home to play host to Birmingham-Southern College for the Tigers' first home game since Oct. 4.

DePauw dropped to 4-2 on the season following a 45-32 loss at Trinity. The teams exchanged touchdowns before the Tigers scored late in the first to take a 13-7 lead. Trinity scored 24 straight to grab a 31-13 advantage in the third. DePauw scored back-to-back touchdowns to close the gap to 31-26 early in the fourth, but the hosts scored 14 straight to extend the margin back to 45-26. Trinity out gained DePauw 472-353 and converted on 10-of-13 third-down situations while possessing the ball for 36:11. Mitchell Willsey paced DePauw with 37 rushing yards in nine attempts, while Spud Dick completed 24 of 45 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Koors caught seven for 114 yards and Mulligan also hauled in seven for 83 yards. Kyle Sherer led the DePauw defense with 13 tackles, while Ryan Preuss added nine. Marc Hoeppner and Tarren Collins each added eight. Dick ranks third in DePauw history with 5,259 passing yards and needs just 29 to move into second. He also is second in total offense yards with 5,261.

No. 8 Millsaps (7-0, 5-0 SCAC) improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a solid, 38-17 victory over the Sewanee Tigers Saturday afternoon at Harper Davis Field.  After their opening possession stalled on six plays, the Majors scored on four of their next five drives to take a 24-3 lead into the locker room. Junior Kenny Metzger scored the opening touchdown of the game at the 5:15 mark in the first, scampering 12-yards for the score. Millsaps would follow with a Taylor Russolino 26-yard field goal, a 6-yard blocked punt return from Sam Herman and a Daniel Whitmore 4-yard run.  Sewanee scored its lone points in the half off a 24-yard field goal from Andrew Gould.  Despite not throwing a touchdown pass in the first half, senior QB Juan Joseph finished 20-of-29 for 246 yards and two TDs in three and a half quarters of work. Joseph hit 13 different receivers on the afternoon, including TD strikes to senior Eric McCarty and sophomore Michael Pivnick late in the third quarter that pushed the Millsaps lead out to 38-3.  Two late touchdowns from Sewanee made the final score 38-17.  Sewanee was outgained on the afternoon just 344-237 in total yards and earned one less first down (18-17), doing a majority of its damage late in the game with the outcome already decided.  Millsaps will take a much needed weekend off before traveling to 18th-ranked Trinity (Texas) on Nov. 1.  That game, as it has the last two seasons, will likely decide who wins the SCAC and earns the automatic berth into the playoffs.

Rhodes continues to lead the SCAC in several defensive categories. Currently the Lynx lead the SCAC in Total defense (246.2 ypg) , rushing defense (74.2 ypg) and sacks (23).  The Lynx currently rank 1st in the nation in sacks, fourth nationally  in tackles for loss and 6th  in rushing defense. Senior linebacker Mason Mosby leads the league in tackles per game (13.6) and Desmond Hendricks leads in Sacks (7.5) and Tackles for Loss (14.5). Hendricks is fourth in the nation in sacks and 9th in the nation tackles for loss per game. Mosby is 6th in the nation in tackles per game (13.6). Freshman wide receiver Jake Jackson is fourth in the league in receiving yards per game (61.8) and senior cornerback Tom Oliver leads the league in punt returns, averaging 12.3 yards a return.  Lynx senior running back Charles Hoggard rushed for 119 yards against Colorado College and is third in the SCAC with 499 yards rushing in 8 games.  

Sewanee was in Jackson for some SCAC football action Saturday and fell 38-17 to the 12th-ranked Majors of Millsaps. After being down 38-3 early in the second half, Sewanee outscored Millsaps 14-0 for the rest of the game. Millsaps had 18 first downs in the contest, while Sewanee had 17. The Majors had 344 total offensive yards and Sewanee had 237.Trey Reliford rushed for 67 yards for Sewanee Patrick Shelton threw for 87 yards for the Tigers. Defensively, freshman Braxton Redeagle led Sewanee's effort with 10 total tackles. Clayton Harrison had seven. Sewanee (2-5, 1-4 SCAC) will compete next weekend on the Mountain as the Tigers will host visiting Trinity, which is currently ranked #18 in Division III.

No. 18 Trinity defeated DePauw 45-32 in a battle between two of the top three teams in the SCAC standings last weekend. Trinity used a 14-point second quarter to take a 21-13 lead into halftime, and then scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to seal the victory in the end. Riley Curry finished with 11 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown, nabbing 11 receptions for the second straight week.  Chris Coleman had a pair of touchdowns among his eight catches and 93 receiving yards.  Bryant Wilson was 28-35 with four touchdowns and a career-high 295 yards for the Trinity Tigers.  His 80% completion rate is the second-highest in school history for a single game - for a minimum of 20 completions. Running back Al Furlow was the real story, though, finishing with a total of 160 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.  Furlow had 90 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 carries (5.6 yards/carry), as well as three catches for 24 yards and another score.  He also returned two kickoffs for a total of 46 yards. The Trinity defense forced three interceptions in the game, including one that was returned 80 yards for a Trinity touchdown by Jeff Jones.  It was the second interception of the year for Jones, and his second career INT for a touchdown. The 80-yard return is also believed to be the longest interception return in school history. Saturday will mark the 22nd meeting all-time between Trinity and Sewanee, with Trinity holding a 17-4 record overall.  The series between the two Tiger teams dates back to 1974 - an 8-7 win for Trinity in the closest game ever between these two teams.
