SUWANEE, Ga. - During the week, DePauw University senior guard Mike Moore moved to within 12 assists of the SCAC career record. Meanwhile, Nathan Ollie's career-high 33 points (18 in the second half) helped lead the Rhodes College Lynx to its first win over Rust College in eight years.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin was idle
during the week. The Kangaroos return to the court on Thursday,
December 18 when it hosts the University of Texas-Dallas for a 7
p.m. tip-off. Austin ends the week hosting Stevenson on Saturday,
December 20 (2 p.m. tip-off) and then closes out the 2008 portion
of its schedule by hosting the Milwaukee School of Engineering on
December 29 at 3 p.m.
Birmingham-Southern (4-3) went 1-0 this week as
they defeated cross-town foe Southeastern Bible College, 90-79, on
Saturday. The Panthers came out hungry in the second half
after trailing, by as many as 14, for the entire first
half. BSC tied the score for the second time of the game off a
three from Isaiah Doaty with 11:31 left in the game. Michael
Rebarchak led the way for the Panthers, posting his first
double-double of the season, with 22 points and 14
rebounds. Roger Williams added 21 points and seven
boards. BSC will be on the road this week as they close out
2008 against Huntingdon College on Wednesday and Rust College on
Friday. Both games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
No. 16 Centre took last week off to concentrate on
finals and will return to action Monday with a road contest against
UC-Clermont. The Colonels will then play at Thomas More Wednesday
in their final game before Christmas. Centre is currently 5-1 on
the year.
Colorado College closed out its
2008 portion of the schedule in historical fashion as the Tigers
earned its first ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
victory, a 71-56 win over Southwestern, back on December 6. The
Tigers are off until January 3 when it travels to Austin College to
pick back up SCAC play.
DePauw jumped out to
a 16-2 lead and never trailed in taking a 103-55 win over visiting
Purdue North Central. The Tigers improved to 5-3 with the win.
Thirteen different Tigers scored led by Mike Moore's 23 points in
21 minutes. Tom Callen added 16 followed by Drew Wills with a
career-high 13. Callen and Moore each grabbed a team-high six
rebounds as the Tigers held a 41-29 edge on the boards. Tony James
and David Gray each dished out four assists. The Tigers shot 54.4
percent from the floor including 63.6 percent in the first half and
knocked down 12-of-24 three-pointers. The Panthers hit just 37.3
percent from the field including 3-of-15 from beyond the arc. The
win was DePauw's 17th straight at home over a non-conference
opponent and marked the first time the Tigers have topped the
100-point plateau since a 104-78 win over the University of Dallas
on December 29, 2006. Mike Moore needs just three assists to move
into second place on DePauw's all-time list and 12 to break the
SCAC career mark. DePauw travels to Terre Haute on Saturday to face
Division I Indiana State. The game is DePauw's first regular season
contest against a Division I foe since facing Northwestern in
December of 2005.
Hendrix was idle this week. The Warriors (5-1, 1-0
SCAC) return to the court on Thursday, December 18 when it hosts
Central Baptist at 8 p.m. Hendrix closes out the 2008 portion of
its schedule in Daytona Beach, Fla. at the Land of Magic Classic
December 28 & 30.
Millsaps had five
players score in double figures, led by senior Chad Songy with 14
points and a game-high six assists, as the host Majors snapped a
two-game skid in a hard fought 70-66 win over visiting LaGrange
College Sunday afternoon. Senior Chris Sanders scored 12 points off
the bench, including hitting 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch,
while Blake Martinez had 13, Russell Booth added 11 and Chris Ingle
10. LaGrange built a 7-point halftime lead, 37-30, thanks to a
sizzling 63.6 percent shooting on 14-of-22 aim and 10 points apiece
from Nic Whitfield and Joe Cromwell. The Panthers led it from the
6:54 mark in the first half until the 6:29 mark in the second, a
span of 20:25, before Millsaps finally retook the lead 58-57 off a
Blake Martinez lay-up that capped a 9-2 run for the home team.
LaGrange jumped back in front momentarily, 60-59, thanks to a
Whitfield and-one with just over three minutes left in regulation
before Songy's 3-pointer for Millsaps off a Martinez assist put the
Majors up for good. Millsaps will open a tough, 3-game road swing
on Tuesday at Division I Southeastern Louisiana, tipping off at 7
p.m. in the University Center. That will be followed by road
conference games at Trinity and Southwestern University on Jan. 2
and 4.
Oglethorpe had the week off. The Stormy Petrels
return to the court Friday, December 19 when it hosts Buffalo State
at 6 p.m. Oglethorpe then closes out its 2008 portion of the
schedule on Saturday, December 20 when it hosts Pitt-Greensburg at
8 p.m. The Stormy Petrels then pick up SCAC play on January 2
traveling to Memphis, Tenn. to square off with league foe
Rhodes.
Rhodes defeated Rust College 82-79 this
week. The victory was the first over Rust in eight
years. Nathan Ollie scorched the nets for a career high 33
points including going 5-11 from beyond the arc. As a team,
Rhodes shot 42% from the three point line going 14-33 on the
game. Cory Smith and Dean Shroyer each reached double digits
in scoring with 15 points. Rhodes had a +4 rebounding
advantage on the night with Rob Bledsoe and Kory Kilpatrick each
grabbing 7 apiece. Rhodes also dished out a season high 18
assists, led by Smith's 6 and Jeff Blumenthal's 4. Rhodes will be
in action again on Saturday, December 20th as they
travel to Dallas, Texas to take on the University of
Dallas. Rhodes returns to Mallory Gymnasium on December
29th as they host Westminster College (MO) before
starting SCAC play.
Sewanee led Emory much of the first half in
Atlanta Tuesday night, but Emory took control in the second half to
get the 77-66 win. The Tigers led by as much as five points in the
first, but Emory was able to get the double-digit win in the end.
Seniors Bradley Pierson and Kenton Coleman led Sewanee with 17
points each, while fellow senior Ben Pursell logged a double-double
with 11 points and 12 rebounds. All three Tigers are averaging in
double digits an Pierson is averaging 18 ppg to lead the squad.
Sewanee made three of 20 three-point attempts and Emory was 2-11
from behind the line. The Eagles out-rebounded the Tigers 38-28.
Sewanee is now 2-6 and will resume play after the holidays at
Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes on January 2 and 4.
Southwestern was idle this week. They will resume
play this week in the Southwestern/Trinity Classic. The
Pirates will take on Marian on Thursday night and Lakeland on
Friday night.
No. 22 Trinity was idle this week. The Tigers return to the court Thursday, December 18 when it travels to Georgetown, Texas to take on Lakeland in the Southwestern/Trinity Holiday Classic at 6 p.m. Trinity continues the Southwestern/Trinity Holiday Classic, the following day (December 19) by squaring off against Marian (Wis.). Trinity then closes out the 2008 portion of its schedule on New Year's Eve (December 31) by hosting SUNY Institute of Technology for a 5 p.m. tip-off. SCAC play picks back up on January 2-3 when the Tigers hosts Millsaps and Hendrix, respectively.
