SUWANEE, Ga. - The 2008-09 men's basketball season got underway with nine games during the weekend of November 15-16. Three SCAC teams, (Birmingham-Southern, #13 Centre, and Oglethorpe) remained unbeaten after the season's first weekend of play.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin did not play
this weekend. The Kangaroos open up its 2008-09 season November 17
when it travels to the University of Texas-Tyler for a 7:30 p.m.
encounter.
Birmingham-Southern (2-0) opened the 2008-09
season with a pair of wins in the Black Tie Club Classic over the
weekend. BSC defeated the University of Dallas 72-48 on Saturday
night and then Huntingdon College 95-82 on Sunday afternoon. The
Panthers used good shooting and steady pressure in both games that
initially went back and forth. Aaron Parr, named Classic MVP, led
the Panthers both nights on the offensive end, with 15 points on
Saturday and 26 on Sunday. BSC shot a scorching 59-percent from the
floor in both halves on Saturday. Michael Rebarchak played two
solid games for ‘Southern, earning a second spot on the
All-Classic Team. He had 19 points, 18 rebounds, 8 blocks, 5
assists, and 3 steals for both games. BSC will be on the road this
Wednesday, November 19, as they travel to LaGrange College for a
battle of the Panthers in LaGrange, Georgia. Game time is set for
6:00 p.m.
In a rematch of one of last year's NCAA First Round Tournament
games, No. 13 Centre defeated Franklin College
67-65 to open the 2008-09 season with a win. With the game tied at
62 apiece with only 0:58 left to play, Centre hit five of its six
free throw attempts in the final minute to come away with the win.
The Colonels had three players finish in double figures,
including senior T.C. Thomason, who scored a game-high 23 points.
Centre will next play Maryville College on the road Tuesday, Nov.
18, followed by is home-opener against Transylvania Saturday, Oct.
15.
Colorado College posted its first
victory since Feb. 27, 2007, with an 86-85 overtime victory against
the University of La Verne in the season opener Saturday afternoon
in the 2008 CC Tip-Off Classic. Sophomore forward Brady Ohlsen led
the Tigers with 23 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Senior
guard Lance Jacobs buried three of four three-point attempts and
finished with 22 points. The Tigers' Jarrell Sweet turned a steal
by Colin Madden into an 86-83 lead with 11 seconds remaining, but
the victory wasn't secured until the third of Matt Heyd's free
throws rattled out after he was fouled on a desperation
three-pointer with .04 seconds remaining. Colorado College returns
to action next weekend when the Tigers face Division II Adams
State and Chadron State in the ASC Bankers Classic in Alamosa,
Colo., on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
DePauw did not play.
The Tigers open up its 2008-09 season Friday, November 21 against
Franklin in the Wabash College Tip-Off Tournament.
Hendrix College senior forward Andrew King posted
his first double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 rebounds
in the Warriors' 64-61 season-opening loss at the University of the
Ozarks in front of a packed house at the Mabee Center Turnovers
plagued Hendrix as the team handed the ball over 21 times in the
affair. Ozarks took advantage of the Warrior mistakes and tallied
23 points off turnovers. Hendrix saw an early lead slip away
with 6:12 left in the first half and would not see an advantage for
the remainder of the game. The Eagles stretched their lead to 10
points by the end of the break, 36-26, and led by as many as 12
points on two occasions during the second half. The Warriors
managed to cut their deficit to one point with 5:23 remaining in
regulation, however, Ozarks held off a late surge by Hendrix to
come away with the win.
Millsaps fell to
cross-street rival Belhaven on Saturday in its season-opener,
76-57, after the host Blazers pulled away in the second half on 54
percent shooting. With the win, Belhaven stayed perfect on
the year at 4-0 and Millsaps dropped to 0-1. Free throw
problems plagued the Majors as they have the previous few seasons,
hitting just 12-of-27 (44 percent) on the night compared to
10-of-17 (59 percent) for Belhaven. Junior Blake Martinez
netted a team and career-high 17 points on the night on 6-of-13
shooting, while Chris Ingle was the only other Millsaps player in
double figures with 12 after hitting just 6-of-16 foul shots. Chad
Songy also had a game-high six assists. Millsaps will
continue a 4-game road stretch to start the season next Friday,
traveling to Pineville, La. for a 7 p.m. tipoff against Louisiana
College. That game can be seen live on the internet at

Oglethorpe did not play. The Stormy Petrels open
up its 208-09 season November 17 when it hosts the Emory (Ga.)
University Eagles at 7 p.m. at Dorough Fieldhouse.
Rhodes did not play this weekend. The Lynx open up
its 2008-09 season when it travels to Tulsa, Okla. for a showdown
with Rhema College on November 21 at 8 p.m.
Sewanee opened its 2008-09 season at the
Birmingham-Southern Black Tie Classic this weekend and fell to 0-2
with losses to Huntingdon and Dallas on Saturday and Sunday. Senior
Bradley Pierson led the Tiger scoring effort this weekend with 29
points between the two games. Sewanee is 0-2 and will host the Lon
Varnell Classic next weekend with games against Rust College and
Mississippi College.
Southwestern did not play this past
weekend. They open the season against the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Trinity did not play this weekend. The Tigers open up its
2008-09 season Friday, November 21 when it hosts Shreiner
University at 7 p.m. in the Trinity/Southwestern Tip-Off
Classic.
