SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head
coaches in the league, Max Frey of Trinity has been selected the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men’s Tennis
Player-of-the-Year. In that same balloting, DePauw
University’s Tom Cath was voted Men’s
Coach-of-the-Year.
Frey, a first-year player from Broken Arrow, Okla. posted a 13-8
singles record (11-6 doubles) and was ranked in the top 10
nationally all year in singles play. In the fall, Frey won the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Southwest
Region championship. Frey became the 10th different (12th overall)
Trinity player to be named SCAC Player-of-the-Year.
For the third consecutive year and sixth time in the past 11
seasons, DePauw’s Cath has been recognized by his peers as
the SCAC Men’s Tennis Coach-of-the-Year. Only Butch Newman of
Trinity (nine times) has more men’s tennis COTY awards than
Cath. Cath’s 13th-ranked Tigers earned their third straight
SCAC title after defeating 14th-ranked Trinity, 6-3, in the SCAC
championship match. Cath has compiled a 373-164 record in 24
seasons at DePauw, including this year’s 21-3 mark, and led
the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th consecutive year.
