NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The 12th-ranked DePauw University Tigers captured their second straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and earned a fifth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championship with a 9-0 win over 22nd-ranked Trinity.
DePauw took all three doubles matches by 8-2 scores to gain a
3-0 lead and then won four of the six singles matches in straight
sets and won the third set in the other two matches for the
shutout. DePauw improved to 16-8 on the season, while Trinity
dropped to 11-7.
With the victory, DePauw swept both the women’s and
men’s championships outright for the second consecutive year.
The last time a school swept both championships in consecutive
years was 2004 and 2005 when Trinity accomplished the feat.
DePauw had seven different players make the 2009 All-Tournament
team. Five of those – Betsey Flanzer, Kelly Gebert, Greer
Mackie, Kayla Smith and Tricia Wilks – all went undefeated at
their respective singles’ slots to earn all-tournament
honors. Janelle Arita joined Gebert at No.2 doubles and Kristine
Lewry joined Wilks at No. 3 doubles.
Repeat selections from last year on the all-tournament team
included Arita, Jordan Evans, Flanzer, Lewry, Mackie, Smith and
Britt Swenson.
Swenson of Colorado College, who went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0
at No. 4 singles, is the second player to ever earn all-tournament
honors at the same tournament at two different singles positions.
Southwestern University’s Lali Satyavada (2-0 No. 5 / 2-0 No.
