SUWANEE, Ga. - In a week which was dominated by out of conference play, Colorado College made the most hay picking up four conference points with a tie against DePauw University Friday and then a 1-0 win against Centre College on Sunday. Trinity University remained perfect (14-0) by picking up two home wins against non-conference opponents St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University and Wheaton (Ill.) College.
Austin College had a strong showing over the
weekend, being narrowly defeated 1-0 by Centre College before
handing DePauw University its first Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference defeat of the season in a 3-2 win. In the loss to Centre
the Colonels got on the board just over four minutes into the game
when a long throw in was deflected into the Austin College goal for
the only score of the game. Matt Dickinson was outstanding in the
net, stopping several shots that looked to be surefire goals on his
way to making nine saves. On Sunday the team jumped out to a 2-0
lead by halftime and extended to 3-0 before the Tigers scored twice
in the final five minutes to close the gap. Garrett Evans got
things started when he scored on an assist from Luis Castillo in
the 24th minute, and Castillo added his team-best fifth goal of the
season just before halftime. In the second half the ’Roos
went up by three when a shot deflected off of a DePauw player for
an own goal, which proved to be the game winner. Dickinson was once
again strong in the net, making eight saves. This week the team
will face Colorado College as a part of homecoming weekend.
Birmingham-Southern lost a match on the road on
Thursday at Maryville College, 1-0. The loss drops the men to
2-12-0 on the season. The Panthers were never able to get a footing
on the offensive end of the pitch. BSC managed just 8 shots in the
game, four in each half. The Maryville keeper made five saves to
preserve the shut-out and send Southern home empty-handed. BSC will
be on the road again next weekend, as they travel to Texas for a
pair of SCAC opponents. Friday, the Panthers will travel to San
Antonio for a 6:00 p.m. match at Trinity. On Sunday they will
square-off with Southwestern at noon from Georgetown.
Centre split a pair of road games over the
weekend defeating Austin College on Friday before falling to
Colorado College on Sunday. On Friday at Austin, the Colonels
outshot the Roos' 16-4 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks en
route to a 1-0 win. Then on Sunday at Colorado, the Tigers defeated
the Colonels 1-0 in a tightly contested match. The Tigers outshot
the Colonels 19-16 and held a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks. Centre
is now 12-4 on the season and 6-2 in the SCAC. The Colonels play
their homecoming match next weekend against Depauw University.
Colorado College improved to 3-1-1 in conference
play over the weekend with a tie against DePauw Friday afternoon
and a win against Centre on Sunday. Senior forward Logan Boccard
scored his first game-winning goal of the season and fourth of his
career in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Centre. The Tigers are
6-0 this season when he scores a goal. Junior goalkeeper Brian
Engle made five saves en route to his fourth shutout in eight
games. That is the most saves he has made in a shutout this season.
Engle has not allowed more than one goal in a game this season.
Junior forward Brendan Douglas snapped a five-game pointless streak
when he set up Boccard’s goal against the Colonel’s. It
was the second game-winning assist for Douglas this season. He also
has one GWG. Junior forward Trevor Cobb set up CC’s only goal
in the 1-1 tie with DePauw. The Tigers are 6-0-1 when he has at
least one point. Colorado College improved to 3-2 in one-goal
games.
DePauw's unbeaten string of nine straight came
to an end on Sunday as the Tigers lost to Austin by a 3-2 score.
That followed a 1-1 tie at Colorado College on Friday. The Tigers
trailed 1-0 at Colorado College after the hosts scored less than 10
minutes into the contest, but Salvatore Greco knotted the contest
on Kaes Kamman's assist at 12:18. The teams then went scoreless for
over 97 minutes and the game ended in DePauw's fourth tie of the
season and its seventh overtime contest. Colorado College held a
34-7 advantage in shots and 9-2 edge in corners. Ted Jacobi
recorded 11 saves for the Tigers. DePauw trailed at Austin, 3-0
early in the second half, but closed the gap to 3-2 as Mike Harris
knocked in a penalty kick at 84:25 and Kaes Kamman rounded out the
scoring with 1:30 left on Brian Lawless' assist. The Tigers outshot
Austin, 23-10 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Jacobi recorded
three saves in the loss.
Hendrix did not play this past week. The Warriors
will return to action this weekend as they host a pair
non-conference games in Conway.
Millsaps (6-8, 2-2 SCAC) was idle. They travel to
Southwestern and Trinity Oct. 24-26.
Oglethorpe won their only match of the week last
Wednesday when they defeated Piedmont College on Salamone Field,
2-1. The Petrels were lifted by the outstanding play of senior
Scott Devault who recorded two excellent assists on the afternoon
to guide Oglethorpe to victory. Both assists led to outstanding
headers into the back of the net, the first by freshman Aaron
Walker and the second by senior Amel Komic for the game-winner.
With the result, Oglethorpe is now 3-8-3 on the season and gets set
to host another non-conference tilt versus Huntingdon College this
Saturday afternoon.
Rhodes split this past week falling to Christian
Brothers on Wednesday evening 4-2. The Lynx however rebounded over
the weekend defeating the Hawks of Huntingdon on Saturday 3-1.
Rhodes will return to action this weekend as they get set to host
Central Baptist College on Sunday.
Sewanee did not play this past week. The Tigers
will return to action this Friday as they host nationally ranked
Emory (Ga.) University on the Mountain.
Southwestern were handed a loss in San Antonio by
St. Lawrence on Saturday, dropping two goals in the second half to
finish 0-2. A renewed drive by the Bucs in the final twenty minutes
of the game led to several opportunities to even the score, but in
the end the Saints defensive efforts won out.
No. 1 Trinity remained undefeated on the season
with a pair of wins over former NCAA Division III Champions last
weekend. The Tigers defeated 1999 Champs St. Lawrence University
5-1 on Friday night, then followed that up with a 4-1 win over
12th-ranked Wheaton (IL) College – the 1984 and 1997 national
champions – on Saturday night. Ben Grossman scored a hat
trick in Friday’s win, coming off the bench to propel the
team to victory. Noe Casanova had three assists in the game, while
Joseph DeCosta added two more. Casanova added a goal and another
assist on Saturday. Patrick Floeck and Cameron Hogsett had a goal
in each game for the Tigers. Trinity will host Birmingham-Southern
and Millsaps next weekend, continuing play in the SCAC. Trinity is
17-0 against Millsaps in SCAC play, including a 10-0 win in
Jackson, Mississippi last year. Trinity and Birmingham-Southern
played for the first time last season, with the Tigers earning a
2-1 victory.
