JACKSON, Miss. - The Centre College women's soccer team scored two goals in both the first half and the second half on its way to a 4-2 win over Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Sunday, Oct. 5, in Jackson, Miss.
The Colonels, which remain unbeaten in SCAC play, move to 6-3-1 overall and 4-0 in the league, while Millsaps falls to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Centre wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) hit an unassisted goal at the 1:38 mark in the first half to give the Colonels and early 1-0 lead.
Garr added her second goal just over six minutes later off an assist from senior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) to extend the lead to 2-0.
Millsaps' Meredith Harris put the Majors on the board with a goal at the 44:02 mark in the first half and the score at the break as 2-1 in favor of Centre.
Terry opened the scoring in the second half with a goal off an assist from senior Casey Yeakel (Prospect, Ky.) to push the lead to 3-1.
Senior Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) capped the scoring for the Colonels with a goal at the 60:02 mark in the second half. Senior Nicole Wendschlag (Lexington, Ky.) had the assist.
Jessica Harris added a goal for Millsaps, but it wasn't enough as the match ended with a 4-2 score for the visitor.
"Our intensity to get to the end line was very good." Centre head coach Jay Hoffman said. "We set the tone early in the game that we wanted to get tot he line and make things happen. Both Brittany and Allison did a great job doing this," Hoffman added.
Centre out-shot the Majors 11-6 on the day and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the win in goal for the Colonels with one save.
"I am extremely proud of our women this weekend. We
adjusted to two very different field surfaces and were able to come
back with two wins," Hoffman finished.
