TUNICA, Miss. - The Oglethorpe University
men repeated as conference champions at the 2009 SCAC Golf
Championships which concluded on Sunday at Tunica National Golf
Course.
Oglethorpe shot a team score of 920 to win by seven shots while
holding off a furious finish from Rhodes College. The Lynx
finished with a team score of 927 after a tournament-best round of
300 on Sunday.
Oglethorpe's Scott Pugh, a junior from Harrisburg, Pa., fired
a final round 74 to win the men's individual medalist race
by a stroke over Rhodes College's Bill Bazzel. Pugh finished
the tournament with a three-day total of 225.
Joining Pugh on the 2009 All-SCAC team from Oglethorpe were
teammates Colin Chapman, Olafur Loftsson and Hap Kaufold.
The conference championship is the eighth for Oglethorpe, tying the
Petrels with Rhodes for second on the CAC/SCAC all-time men's
golf titles list. Sewanee has won 13 men's golf championships,
but just one in the SCAC era (1992-forward).
In the SCAC era, Oglethorpe has more than twice as many conference
titles in men's golf than the next closest school (Trinity with
three).
The tournament victory, which gave Oglethorpe its most SCAC
Championships in any sport, also provided the Stormy Petrels with
an automatic qualifier berth to the 2009 NCAA Division III Golf
Championships to be held from May 11 to May 16 at the PGA Golf
Course in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. It will mark Oglethorpe's
ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Golf Championships where the
Stormy Petrels have recorded a top-10 finish in each of the last
seven years.
