Centre and Sewanee advance to SCAC Championship match

DANVILLE, Ky. - The second seeded Centre College Colonels and the fourth seeded Sewanee-The University of the South Tigers advanced to the SCAC Field Hockey Championship match with semifinal victories over third seeded Rhodes College and top seeded DePauw University respectively.

In the first game, Sewanee broke a 2-2 tie when sophomore Caroline Carlin found the back of the cage off a penalty corner with only 3:54 remaining and hung for the 3-2 win. DePauw, which won the SCAC championship last season, held a 26-12 advantage in shots and a 14-4 margin in penalty corners.

Sewanee struck first after senior Lynn Hancock fired a shot into the back of the goal at 17:53 of the first half. DePauw took its first in the second half thanks to goals from Meredidth Ellis and Carolyn Mueller just over two minutes apart. Sewanee's Claiborne Buckingham tied it with 9:41 to go with an unassisted goal which led to Carlin's game winner minutes later.

In the day's second game, the host Centre Colonels advanced to the championship match with a 1-0 overtime win against Rhodes. The Colonels' Rachel Watkins netted the game-winning goal just over 1:30 into overtime.

Centre will square off against Sewanee at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9 for the SCAC Tournament Championship. Rhodes will play DePauw in the consolation match at 11 a.m. in Danville, Ky.

Notes: Both Centre and Sewanee advance to their third conference championship match since 2004. The Tigers look for their first SCAC championship while the Colonels will aim for their second championship as they won the SCAC title in 2005 with a 2-1 overtime win over DePauw.
