DANVILLE, Ky. - Playing its third game in three days, the No. 4 Sewanee Tigers became SCAC champions with a 1-0 upset over No. 2 seed and host Centre College Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers and Colonels fought through a scoreless first half,
as both defenses set the tone early. Sewanee got the
championship clinching goal from sophomore Caroline
Carlin off of a penalty-corner with 14:28 to play.
"The team has come a long way this season. The players have really
come together as a team and I am so proud of everyone. This weekend
was a good demonstration of our heart and throughout the weekend,
we kept playing better and better. The team deserved the win after
how well they have been playing," said first year Sewanee coach Jen
Baldaccini.
It is the first-ever field hockey championship for Sewanee (14-6), who lost its two previous appearances in the SCAC championship match. Centre fell to 12-7 with the loss.
In the consolation match, DePauw University's Carolyn Mueller scored the lone goal with 1:07 remaining to top the Rhodes College Lynx.
Notes: Sewanee improved to 1-2 in the SCAC Championship match while Centre fell to 1-2 in the championship match. Each of the five games in this year's tournament were decided by one-goal. It is the third time in the SCAC Field Hockey era (since 2004) and first since 2005, that every game was a one-goal game.
