SUWANEE, Ga. - Millsaps College defeated Oglethorpe and Sewanee this past weekend picking up a pair of conference wins in the same weekend for the first time since 1996. The Majors, who have not won four conference games in the same season since 1998 have a chance in the final weekend of conference play to match the school's record for conference wins in a season set in 1996 at five.
Austin College split its final two home matches
of the season, topping Hendrix College 2-0 on Friday before falling
5-3 in a wild game against Rhodes College on Sunday. On Friday the
’Roos got a goal and an assist from both Garrett Evans and
Chris Stein, with Evans tallying what would prove to be the game
winning goal in the 26th minute. Grant Gosselin stopped five shots
in the shutout victory. On Sunday the ’Roos fell behind early
but knotted things at 1-1 on a goal by Jason Replogle. However,
Rhodes scored the next two and managed to maintain their lead
despite second half goals from Evans and Luis Castillo. Grant
Gibson, Miles Vaughn and Alex Dawson each had assists for the
’Roos, who head into the final weekend of the season with a
6-9-1 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference play. The ’Roos will be traveling to Atlanta to
face Oglethorpe on Friday and then heading to Tennessee to take on
Sewanee on Sunday.
Birmingham-Southern split their matches over the
weekend, taking a 4-0 win over Sewanee on Friday before dropping
their last home game of the season 1-0 to Oglethorpe on Sunday.
Freshman striker, Daniel Jackson had the night of his young career
on Friday. He got the hat-trick against Sewanee, scoring three of
the Panthers’ four goals on the night. His first came in the
third minute unassisted, the second in the 22nd, and his third at
the end of the match off a penalty kick in the 89th-minute.
Unfortunately for BSC, they seemed to use all their offense on
Halloween and had nothing on Sunday. The Oglethorpe defense held
the Panthers scoreless in their final home game of the 2008 season.
BSC will wrap-up the season in Memphis on Friday and in Conway on
Sunday. They take on the Lynx at 2:00 p.m. at Rhodes and at noon
from Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon.
Centre won its second straight game on Sunday by
shutting out visiting Maryville College 1-0. The Colonels outshot
the Scots 14-2 and had 5 corner kicks to Maryville’s 7. With
the win, the Colonels improve to 14-4 on the year and remain 6-2 in
the SCAC. Centre closes out its regular season this upcoming
weekend with home games against SCAC rivals Trinity and
Southwestern.
Colorado College picked up two big conference wins
over the weekend and moved into second place in the SCAC with only
one weekend of regular season games remaining. Jordan Reese is 2
for 2 on penalty kicks after converting on Friday against Rhodes
College. It was his first game-winning goal of the season and
fourth of his career. With the assist on Logan Boccard’s
game-winning goal against Hendrix College, junior forward Trevor
Cobb has now been involved in eight of CC’s game winners,
scoring four and setting up four. Junior goalkeeper Brian Engle
made four saves against Rhodes and posted his sixth shutout of the
season and fourth in conference play. He improved his record to
9-1-0 overall and lowered his goals-against average to 0.40.
Colorado College posted its 10 shutout of the season and fifth in
conference play with Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Hendrix
College. The Tigers have not allowed a goal in an SCAC game since
Oct. 17 against DePauw, a span of 454:01. With the victories over
Rhodes College and Hendrix College, CC wrapped up the home portion
of its schedule with a 9-2-1 record. CC is 2-0-1 overtime games and
a 4-3-0 record in games decided by one goal. The Tigers have
allowed more than one goal in a game just twice this season, both
times in the second of back-to-back games when CC’s opponent
did not play the day before. Colorado College will close out the
regular season with games at Sewanee and Oglethorpe on Friday and
Sunday, respectively.
In the Tigers' lone game of the week, DePauw
battled to a scoreless tie at Rose-Hulman. The Engineers outshot
the Tigers 10-3 and held an 8-1 edge in corners. DePauw's Ted
Jacobi totaled five saves in posting his ninth shutout of the
season.
Hendrix dropped a pair of SCAC contests over the
weekend. The Warriors traveled to Austin College for a 2-0 loss on
Friday night, before closing out their road trip with a 1-0
overtime loss to Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix
falls to 4-11 overall and 1-8 in league play. The Warriors missed
on five chances at the goal and narrowly missed the upset on Sunday
as the stalemate lasted 96 minutes when Tigers senior Logan Boccard
put the ball past the keeper for the game winner. First year
midfielder Colin Thompson paced Hendrix on Sunday with two shots,
while eight other Warriors tallied one shot in the affair. Junior
goalkeeper Jon Moore denied seven shots in the affair.
Millsaps swept a conference weekend at home,
knocking off Oglethorpe 2-0 on Friday and Sewanee 4-3 on Sunday in
a double-overtime thriller. The wins improved the Majors to 8-10
overall and 4-4 in league play, the most overall and SCAC wins
since the 1998 season. Junior Corey Beaumont had a pair of goals on
the weekend, including the game-winner over OU, while fellow junior
Colin Thompson netted the equalizer in the 83rd minute and
game-winner in the 106th minute against Sewanee on Sunday. Senior
GK Domenick DiPaolo improved to 5-5 between the posts with a pair
of wins, picking up six total saves and a shutout. Brandon Mong,
who was just recently named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
VI First Team, also scored his team-leading seventh goal of the
year in addition to a Drew Dews goal. Millsaps will wrap up the
2008 season this weekend on the road at Hendrix and Rhodes, needing
one win to tie a school record of nine wins in a season (1996,
1998) and two to set a new record of 10 wins.
Oglethorpe split two conference contests this past
week, falling to Millsaps 2-0 and topping Birmingham-Southern 1-0.
Senior Amel Komic scored the Petrels only goal of the weekend and
the team made it stand for the victory over the Panthers on Sunday.
With the decisions, Oglethorpe is now 5-9-3 for the weekend and
will prepare for their final two contests versus Austin and
Colorado College this weekend. The Petrels will be celebrating
senior day on Sunday to say goodbye to Michael Muller, Amel Komic,
Brett Wooten, Scott Devault, Daniel brown and Carlos Morochz.
Rhodes traveled west this past weekend to Face
Colorado College and Austin College. The Lynx would split their
final road trip of the 2008 season. The Lynx lost to Colorado
College 2-0 and defeated Austin College 5-3. Senior Alex Margolin
would save 15 of 18 shots on goal that he faced against Colorado
College. Against Austin College Junior Logan Ebelry would score two
goals , Senior Patrick Deveau would finish with a goal and 2
assists, Junior Zac Berry had a goal and an assist, and Sophomore
Eric Stradley scored a goal. The Lynx look to finish the 2008
season at home against Birmingham southern College and Millsaps
College.
Sewanee dropped a pair of matches this weekend on
the road. The Tigers fell 4-0 to Birmingham-Southern Friday night
before falling 4-3 in a double overtime heartbreaker to Millsaps on
Sunday. The Tigers are now 4-11-1 on the year and are 1-6-1 in the
SCAC.
Sewanee will host Colorado College and Austin College to wrap up
the season next weekend.
Southwestern dropped a heartbreaker to #1 Trinity
on Saturday, shutting out the Tigers for the first time in
conference play in three years but knocking in a disastrous own
goal in the second half of play to give them a 1-0 victory. The
Pirates led Trinity in both shots (20-14) and corner kicks (6-3),
but were unable to convert several runs on the Tiger goal to
score.
No. 1 Trinity edged Southwestern University 1-0 on
the road on Saturday, which was the team’s only game last
week. The Tigers scored on a Southwestern own-goal late in the
game, which was a matchup of the top two teams in the SCAC
standings. Trinity can clinch the SCAC Championship with a win at
Centre College on Friday. Trinity will face both Centre and DePauw
University next weekend, finishing off the regular season. Last
year, the Tigers shut out both Centre and DePauw in San Antonio.
Trinity won 3-0 over DePauw, then won 2-0 against Centre on October
19 and 21, respectively.
