SUWANEE, Ga. - The Tigers of Trinity University continue to roll through the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule and now have won 16 straight games. Trinity has now been ranked number one in the country for the past five weeks and is looking to be crowned conference champions for the seventh time in a row.
Austin College fell to 5-8-1 overall and 1-4 in
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 4-0 defeat at
the hands of visiting Colorado College on Saturday. The Tigers got
a pair of first half goals and after the ’Roos were unable to
take advantage of some good opportunities to open the second frame,
Colorado College added two more second half goals for the final
four goal difference. Matt Dickinson made seven saves for Austin
College as the ’Roos were out-shot 17-9 in the match. This
weekend Austin College will be looking to get back in the win
column when they host SCAC rivals Hendrix College and Rhodes
College in the team’s final two home matches of the
season.
Birmingham-Southern dropped a pair this weekend
in Texas. First, on Friday, they lost 7-0 against the #1-ranked
Trinity Tigers. Then, on Sunday, they dropped another at
Southwestern by a closer 2-1 margin. The losses drop BSC to 2-14 on
the season. BSC will return home to host Sewanee and Oglethorpe
over the Halloween weekend. Friday’s match with Sewanee is
scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and they will host Oglethorpe at noon on
Sunday.
Centre defeated visiting DePauw University 1-0 on
Saturday night in front of a large crowd for homecoming weekend.
The match was scoreless until the 37th minute when junior James
Kusak scored the match’s lone goal off an assist from
freshman Cameron Bayse. Centre out-shot the Tigers 13-8 while
DePauw held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. With the win, the
Colonels improve to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the SCAC. Centre
returns to action Sunday with a non-conference match against
Maryville College.
Colorado College recorded its eighth shutout of
the season in the 4-0 victory over Austin College on Saturday
afternoon in Sherman, Texas. Junior goalkeeper Brian Engle made
three saves en route to his fifth shutout of the season. He
improved to 8-1-0 in goal and lowered his goals-against average to
0.44. CC scored more than twice in a game for the first time since
a 5-0 victory over Millsaps College on Sept. 28. The three goals
scored by Dallas on Sunday were the most allowed by the Tigers this
season. Colorado College will play host to Rhodes College and
Hendrix College this Friday and Sunday, respectively, in the
Tigers’ final two home games of the season.
DePauw dropped to 8-3-4 overall and 4-2-2 in the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference following a 1-0 loss at
Centre. Centre's James Kusak scored on Cameron Bayse's assist at
36:38 for the game's only goal. The Colonels outshot the Tigers
13-8, while DePauw held a 4-3 advantage in corners. DePauw's Ted
Jacobi recorded three saves in goal, while Centre's Aaron Arndt
totaled four.
Hendrix split a pair of non-conference matches
this week with a 1-0 loss to Central Baptist College on Friday and
a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win over Williams Baptist College
on Saturday. The Warriors now stand at 4-9 overall on the season.
Hendrix missed on nine chances to tie the game after Central
Baptist its lone goal of the game in the 10th minute to give the
Mustangs their 1-0 victory in front of an intense crowd Friday.
Hendrix first year midfielder Duncan Keegan led the team with five
shots, two of which were on-goal. First year defender Ryan Menchaca
recorded three shots and junior defender Will Brown tallied a pair
of attempts. The Warriors outshot the Mustangs 17-9 and posted five
corner kicks to Central Baptists’ three. Brown hammered home
the Warriors game-winning goal on Saturday night when he took a
free kick from 50 yards out with six minutes remaining in
regulation. The Warriors snapped a four-game losing streak with the
win. Brown’s game-winner marked his second of the season and
third overall score. Hendrix fell behind early as Williams Baptist
put the ball past the keeper just 0:53 into regulation. The
Warriors found a 2-0 deficit when the Eagles’ scored on a
breakaway in the 7th minute. Hendrix made it a one-goal affair
before the break when first year midfielder Colin Thompson toed the
ball in off a corner kick from junior forward DJ Mello and Keegan.
Warriors’ first year midfielder Grant Chandler knotted the
contest with 46:33 showing on the scoreboard by firing an
unassisted ball into the top right corner of the goal from inside
the box. Hendrix junior goalkeeper Jon Moore posted a solid
performance with four saves. The Warriors outshot the Eagles 26-12
and tallied nine corner kicks, compared to Williams Baptist’s
three.
Millsaps dropped a 4-0 decision to Southwestern
University and a 7-2 decision to top-ranked Trinity University as
they completed a two-game Texas road swing. The losses dropped the
Majors just one spot from sixth to seventh in the conference
standings, as they sit at 2-4 in the SCAC and 6-10 overall. Anthony
Amaya and Andres Colocho scored the Majors’ lone two goals on
the weekend, both against TU, as Amaya connected on his third
penalty kick and Colocho his second goal of the season. Millsaps
will return home Oct. 31 for its last two home matches of the
season, hosting Oglethorpe and Sewanee (Senior Day). Game times are
set for 8 p.m. on Friday and Noon on Sunday and can both been seen

Oglethorpe won their only match of the week over
non-conference foe Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon, 2-1.
The Petrels were lifted by the outstanding play of freshmen Greyson
Surges and Jimmy Harter who each produced a goal in the win over
the Hawks. Surges gave Oglethorpe a 1-0 lead only minutes before
the first half expired by heading a perfect pass from senior Scott
Devault just underneath the crossbar and into the side-netting. It
marked the third consecutive Petrel goal that was scored on a
header assisted by Devault. In the second half, Harter won a
challenge near midfield and streaked down the pitch to beat all of
the Hawks defenders including the keeper to record his first career
goal as a Petrel. With the result, Oglethorpe is now 4-8-3 on the
season and will get set to face Millsaps in Jackson on Friday
night.
Rhodes defeated NAIA foe Central Baptist College
2-1 in double overtime. Junior Zac Berry and Senior Patrick Deveau
would score for the Lynx. Rhodes returns to SCAC play this coming
weekend when they travel to Colorado College and also to Austin
College.
Sixth-Ranked Emory came to the Mountain Friday night and after
scoring four unanswered goals in the first half,
Sewanee held the Eagles scoreless in the second
half for a 4-0 final tally in favor of Emory (13-0). Emory outshot
Sewanee 12-8 on the day and committed 14 fouls compared to 12 for
Sewanee. The Eagles were also given three yellow cards. At
halftime, Sewanee alumnus Kyle Rote, Jr., '72 was honored on the
occasion of Sewanee Homecoming and the dedication of the Kyle Rote,
Jr. Field House at the Sewanee soccer/lacrosse complex. Rote kicked
out an honorary game ball and was presented with several gifts,
including a ball signed by the team. Sewanee is now 4-9-1 and 1-5-1
in the SCAC. The Tigers will face Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes
next weekend in road SCAC action.
Southwestern went 2-0 for the weekend, bringing
their record even at 8-8. On Friday against Millsaps, an aggressive
game put the Majors' defense on their heels as the Pirates went for
seventeen corner kicks, eventually scoring off a low shot by
freshman Morgan Knobel. Preston Hollis, who assisted the goal,
would send one in himself in the second half to finish the game
2-0. On Sunday against Birmingham-Southern, a David Lozano run
through the defense put the first point on the board in the 20th
minute, with another scored by Tom Holleman off a keeper fumble in
the 31st. The Panthers added a point off a penalty kick in the
second half, but the Pirate defense held them off to come out with
a 2-1 win.
No. 1 Trinity continued its undefeated season
with a pair of wins at home against Birmingham-Southern and
Millsaps over the weekend. The Tigers scored five second-half goals
to defeat Birmingham-Southern 7-0 on Friday night, led by a school
record-tying four goals by Patrick Floeck. On Sunday, Trinity
earned a 7-2 win over Millsaps thanks to another Trinity hat trick
– this time by Noe Casanova. Casanova also had three assists
over the weekend to tie him for Trinity’s career record for
assists with 38. His 16 assists this year are the second-most in
school history for a single season. Trinity will travel to
Georgetown, Texas this weekend to take on Southwestern University
in a matchup of the top two teams in the SCAC standings. The Tigers
stand 6-0-0 in SCAC play, while Southwestern is 6-1-0 in the
conference. The Tigers are 17-0-3 against Southwestern since 1993,
which includes last year’s 2-1 win in San Antonio. The last
meeting in Georgetown was a 1-0 win for Trinity. In 2005,
Southwestern forced a 2-2 tie in San Antonio, which was the only
blemish of the regular season for the Trinity Tigers.
