AROUND THE SCAC

Austin dropped its final two regular season games during a road trip to Southwestern and Trinity, falling 55-46 to the Pirates and 88-55 to Trinity. Even with the two losses, the 'Roos got locked into the fourth seed out of the West heading into the SCAC Tournament in Conway. Against Southwestern, the team managed just 20% shooting in the second half and hit only 26.9% of their attempts overall. Chris Sturtevant had 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the 'Roos and Kola Alade also had 14 points. Spencer Burke swatted away five shots. Against Trinity, the Tigers came out on fire, knocking down 10-of-16 from deep to put the 'Roos in a big early hole and Austin College was unable to recover. Sturtevant scored a team high 10 points, Alade chipped in with eight and Burke had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Birmingham-Southern (11-14) closed the 2008-09 season with a split. They topped Rust College 68-66 on Wednesday before falling at Rhodes on Saturday 76-63. Roger Williams posted 20 points and 11 rebounds against the Bearcats in the Panther's final win of the season. The Panthers used a strong first half to put away the pesky Bearcats. Both teams shot 41-percent from the floor, but the Panthers used a plus-nine rebounding advantage to their advantage taking seven more shots in the period. BSC closed the half on a 9-2 run, taking a 42-31 lead into the break. Rust never recovered from the deficit. Saturday's game at Rhodes saw the Lynx build up a lead that the Panthers were never fully able to overcome. They close the season with an 11-14 record. They are still going through an NCAA provisional period, making the Panthers ineligible for the SCAC tournament.

No. 17 Centre continued its success in the SCAC, going 2-0 on the weekend to extend their SCAC winning streak to 5 games. In the weekends first SCAC contest the Colonels soundly defeated the visiting Sewanee Tigers, 65-35. Two days later the Colonels defeated a tough Oglethorpe team, 81-71, to lock up the SCAC Eastern Division number one seed in the SCAC Tournament. The Colonels finish the regular season 20-4, 12-2 in the SCAC.  It is third straight 20-plus win for the Colonels. Up next for the Colonels is SCAC opponent Austin College in the first round of the SCAC Tournament.

Colorado College saw its last remaining hopes of qualifying for the SCAC tournament extinguished with a 75-64 loss at Trinity University on Friday night. CC shot just .229 from the field in the first half, making only eight of 35 shots. The Tigers closed the game with an 18-3 run to cut their final deficit to 11 points. Brady Ohlsen led CC with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Jarrell Sweet added 14 points, while Nick Rose had 10. Senior guard Nate Brodman made three of four three-point attempts and finished with a team-high 13 points, but its wasn't enough to get the Tigers a victory in their final game of the season on Sunday at Southwestern. The Pirates avenged its loss to Colorado College during the first weekend of conference play with a 74-59 victory. CC finished the season with a 5-20 overall record and a 4-11 mark in conference play, a dramatic improvement over the 2007-08 season. Sweet had 12 points, four assists and four steals, while Lance Jacobs added nine points.

DePauw completed a weekend sweep of Oglethorpe by an 85-58 score and Sewanee, 80-46. In the win over Oglethorpe closed the first half with a 10-2 run and opened the second with an 8-2 stretch to pull away from the Stormy Petrels. Mike Moore led the Tigers with 28 points including 22 in the first half. He knocked down 8-of-14 three-pointers. Tom Callen followed with 15 points and shared the rebounding lead with Sean Haseley and Joe Bergfeld as each had six. Bergfeld added 11 points and Matt Bennett dished out six assists. In the win over Sewanee, the Tigers pulled away with a 13-1 run over a 10-minute stretch of the first half. They then put the game away with a 14-2 stretch in the second half. Moore led the Tigers with 17 points and eight assists, while Callen added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bergfeld added 10 in the win. The win gave DePauw a perfect 13-0 record at home this season as the Tigers have now won 37 of their last 39 games at the Neal Fieldhouse. With his first three-pointer of the Oglethorpe game, Moore broke the DePauw career record of 240 held by Alex Stewart (2002-06). The Tigers shot 52.5 percent for the weekend and have connected on at least 50 percent from the field in four of the last five games. Moore is attempting to become the first DePauw player since Jeff Bibbs in 1979-80 to average at least 20 points per game in a season. He ranks sixth in DePauw history with 1,479 career points and 13th in SCAC history.

Hendrix picked up a win on senior day against Millsaps College on Saturday. Hendrix seniors Ryan Wible, Andrew King and David Foley all scored in double digits in the Warriors' final game of the regular season to post an 88-81 win over the Majors. Hendrix improved to 16-9 overall and 9-6 in SCAC play and will now focus on their first round opponent of the 2009 SCAC Tournament, Oglethorpe University. The Warriors took a lead they would not relinquish on a 3-pointer from Wible with 11:08 left in the first half. Andrew King paced Hendrix with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. David Foley finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds, while Cal Rose collected 11 points and knocked down three shots from behind the arc. King and junior guard Janson Hightower dished out five assists apiece. Blake Martinez led the Majors with 22 points and six 3-pointers, while senior guards Chad Songy and Chris Sanders scored 18 points apiece.

Millsaps' season came to a close Saturday afternoon in a heartbreaking, 88-81 loss at Hendrix College. Four of the Majors' starting five scored in double figures, led by Blake Martinez with a game-high 22 points off six 3-pointers, but it was host Hendrix College who used 26 bench points and a monster game from standout Andrew King for the win. Both teams shot lights out in the opening 20 minutes, with Hendrix hitting 58 percent of its shots and the Majors following with 54 percent shooting. They also combined for 11 3-pointers in the half, as the Warriors led by three at intermission, 45-42, thanks to 10-of-13 shooting from the charity stripe. Millsaps fell behind by a game-high 15 with 6:26 left in regulation before putting together a 20-5 desperation run to knot it at 81-81 with 1:21 remaining. Unfortunately for Millsaps, Hendrix scored the game's final seven points for the 7-point victory and closed the books on the Majors' season. A year after a run to the Elite Eight, Millsaps ended the season at 9-16 overall and 6-9 in the SCAC.
