Women's Track & Field Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All five of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s track & field teams competed this week.

Colorado College hosted the annual CC Track & Field Invitational, while the University of Dallas and Southwestern University traveled to Abilene for the Hardin-Simmons Invitational.

Texas Lutheran University took on Division I competition at the UTSA Invitational and Trinity hit the west coast for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.

Colorado College
The Tigers hosted the annual CC Track & Field Invitational this weekend, attracting teams from all NCAA Divisions. Stefani Messick finished second overall in the 800 meters, clocking in at 2:27.97. She currently sits in second place among all athletes in the SCAC. Asmeda Spalding-Aguirre, the only runner in the 400-meter hurdles, finished with an impressive 1:08.33. The result places her second within the SCAC.
Meanwhile, Samantha Gilbert led the Tigers in the sprints.  In her first 200-meter race of the season, she posted a time of 27.20 seconds, placing her sixth at the meet and seventh in the SCAC. Ayla Loper, the lone competitor in the high jump, finished with a height of 1.45 meters.  She also placed third overall in the 400 with a time of 1:06.37. In the 3000 meters, Katie Sandfort led all runners with a finishing time of 11:28.22. Rounding out a solid day for the Tigers was Leah Wessler, who missed setting the all-time Colorado College mile record by less than half a second. Her 5:25.51 time was good for 2nd place overall in the meet.

University of Dallas
The Crusaders traveled to Abilene, Texas to compete in the Hardin-Simmons Invitational this weekend. Dallas placed fifth in the field of ten teams with 38 points. Katie Mcintyre posted the first top-10 finish of the day for the Crusaders, taking seventh place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.47. Colleen Slattery took 10th in the 400, followed by Amy Sullivan in 11th. Slattery followed up that event with a third place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:30.51. This time ranks sixth among all SCAC runners. Danielle Pajak finished behind her in fourth place with a time of 2:36.62. In the 1500 meter run, Ruth Fritz took second place with a time of 5:14.77. This was less than a second behind the top finisher and over eight seconds ahead of the runner in third place. Fritz also took second in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:58.15. Angela Moore also competed in the 3000, finishing in fourth place (12:05.66). Elizabeth Depew posted fourth place finishes in both the 100 meter (17.91 seconds) and 400 meter hurdles (1:13.65).

Southwestern University
The Pirate took eighth at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational this weekend. Zainab Oketokoun posted the first top-10 finish for the Pirates, taking ninth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:49.44. In the next event, Brianna TImourian took first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:14.01. Oketokoun took sixth in this event, followed by Valerie Vacek in seventh. In the 3000 meter run, Emily Boujemaa took fifth with a time of 12:12.73. Sara Cowan posted a second place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:11.25, taking more than a second off of her seed time. In the field events, Maya Adighibe took seventh in the shot put (8.77 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (34.48 meters). In the discus throw, Anna Hugel finished seventh with a mark of 30.30 meters.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs traveled across town to the University of Texas at San Antonio to compete in the UTSA Invitiational against NCAA Division I competition. The Bulldogs had the top-two finishers in the 2000-meter steeplechase, with Stephanie Ernst taking the title with a time of 9:00.65, barely nudging out teammate, who ran the race in 9:00.72. Nativita Kaminski took second in the 100-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 15.53 seconds. Cori Picazo ran the 100-meter dash in 12.91 seconds, finishing third in the race. Picazo also finished second in the pole vault, recording a distance of 3.70 meters. Haleigh Garcia won the triple jump, recording a distance of 10.87 meters. Teammate Marlena Hunt finished second with a distance of 10.58 meters. Megan Lee took third in the javelin throw. Her best throw notched 26.97 meters. Sarah Randall finished third in the long jump, jumping 5.02 meters.

Trinity University
The Tigers competed in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational this weekend, competing against athletes from all NCAA Divisions at Pomona College. Also in the field were accomplished unattached runners, including international competitors. Nkolika Nweke set Trinity women’s records in the 100 meters (12.35 seconds) with her seventh-place finish, and in the 200 (25.26 seconds), coming in at No. 6. Both times are nationally ranked in the NCAA Division III. Joining Nweke in the under-27 seconds time in the 200 were Bailey Drury, Elizabeth Peters, and Britney Sullivan. The 4x100 relay team of Nweke, Peters, Drury, and Katie Groke finished third, clocking in at 48.83 seconds. The versatile Sullivan was sixth in the long jump, with a mark of 5.33 meters. Mariana Sigala was a 15th-place finisher in the 800 meters (2:18.98). Trinity runners put up solid times in the 5k, including Michelle Oberndorf (18:59.43, 19th place), and Genevieve Primeau (19:00.24, 20th place). Coming in at Nos. 21-23 were Natalie Belew, Melissa Whitman, and Haley McFadden, respectively.
