Women's Tennis Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams were in action this weekend, putting together a cumulative record of 4-4.

Colorado College opened up their spring season with a win over Colorado Christian University on the road, while Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University traveled to Abilene, Texas to take on McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University.

Colorado College
The Tigers earned a 9-0 win over Colorado Christian Saturday to kick off the spring season. In doubles action, Mary Edman and Fiona Cerf teamed up to earn a win in the top spot, 8-3. In the No. 2 spot, Maggie Harwood/Maddie Cayhill won 9-8 and at No. 3 Natalia Dellavalle and Gillian Hyde teamed up for an 8-0 shutout victory. All six of these players won their respective singles categories, with three of the matches going to a third set. Dellavalle downed Katy Balli 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 at the No. 3 spot and Cahill wont the No. 5 match 1-6, 6-2, 1-0. Edman won the other three-setter with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 triumph at the No. 2 position. Cerf won at the No. 1 spot, Harwood took a win at No. 4 and Hyde rounded out the group at No. 6.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers went 1-2 this weekend, defeating Our Lady of the Lake University, but falling to McMurry and Hardin-Simmons. Against OLLU, SU took down the Saints 9-0. The No. 1 doubles team of Karyn Swink and Abby Knedlik won, 8-0, and in the top singles spot, Leanna Hayes got a straight set win, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Brooke Ohlman also took down her opponent 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, Knedlik and Brittney Garza, respectively, each won their matches 6-1, 6-0. As the team traveled to Abilene, their unbeaten streak ended with a morning loss to McMurry (8-1). The Mountaineers only win against the War Hawks came at No. 2 singles where Alex Wheeler posted a straight set victory. The only other SU player to win a set was Swink at No. 3 singles. She fell in a tiebreaker 2-6, 6-2, (10-2). Later in the day, the Mountaineers took on HSU, but fell 5-4 to the Cowgirls. Schreiner got wins by Hayes/Camile Anguiano and No. 1 doubles and Kelsey Buczowski/Katie Watts at No. 3. HSU swept No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, before Swink won her match at No. 4. Knedlik won at No. 6, but the Mountaineers fell after Buczowski had to retire in her No. 5 match with an injury.

Southwestern University
The Pirates went 3-0 this weekend, including a 9-0 win in their home opener against Howard Payne University. Friday, SU battled it out against the Yellow Jackets, beginning with a win at No. 1 doubles as Julie Swets and Emilie Moeller teamed up to win 9-8. At No. 2, Nicole Wilson/Kali Rose pulled out an 8-6 win and Virginia Stofer/Maranda Kahl won 8-3 in No. 3 doubles. In singles action, Marieke Visser won 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in the No. 1 spot, while Swets won in straight sets at No. 2. Moeller dropped her first set in No. 3 singles 2-6 before rallying to take the match. Wilson dominated in No. 4 singles with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win and Rose took No. 5 6-2, 6-0 while Stofer finished out the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. The Pirates continued their hot streak Saturday as they took down Mary Hardin-Baylor 7-2 and University of the Southwest XX. Against UMHB, the Pirates swept doubles play. Moeller/Swets took the No. 1 match 9-7, Rose/Wilson won 8-5 at No. 2 and Kahl/Stofer finished 8-6 at No. 3. In singles action, Swets earned the first win, earning a straight-set win, 6-0, 6-0. Wilson, Rose and Kahl took the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots, respectively, in straight sets. The Pirates faced University of the Southwest on Saturday as well, defeating the Mustangs 7-2. After doubles play, SU was up 3-0, but USW came back with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Stofer earned a straight set win at No. 3 singles, but Mattie Cryer faced a tough challenge in the No. 4 spot, going three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 14-12. Southwestern won by forfeit in the No. 5/6 spots.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs fell to McMurry and Hardin-Simmons by identical scores of 5-4 this weekend on the road. Against HSU, the pair of Sofia Vega and Allison McLain got things started off well, winning the No. 1 double spot 8-5, but TLU couldn’t pick up another win in doubles actions and entered singles down 2-1. The Bulldogs took the top three spots in singles to take a 4-2 lead, but fell in the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots. A similar result happened against McMurry, as Vega, McLain and Caitlin Zarr each won their singles matches at No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Vega/McLain earned an easy 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but the team fell 5-4 to the War Hawks.
