Women's Swimming & Diving Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Five of the six Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s swimming and diving teams competed this weekend.

Austin College hosted a relay meet against Wayland Baptist University and St. Gregory’s Friday evening, defeating both teams. Saturday, the ‘Roos hosted fellow SCAC members McMurry University and Centenary College, along with WBU and St. Gregory’s.

Southwestern traveled to Incarnate World to compete, falling 177-97.

Austin College
The ‘Roos topped Wayland Baptist and St. Gregory’s in a relay meet at home Friday evening, earning wins in the 3x100 backstroke relay (3:01.99), 3x100 breaststroke relay (4:10.05), 200 free relay (2:05.01) and the  400 medley relay (4:53.79). The following day, the ‘Roos hosted WBU and St. Gregory’s, along with SCAC opponents McMurry and Centenary. The ‘Roos finished second out of the five teams with 308 points. In the first event of the day, the AC 200 medley relay earned a fourth place finish with a time of 2:09.55. Sophie Anderson and Sarah Mann finished in third (6:08.10) and fourth (6:08.29), respectively, in the 500 freestyle, before Lauren Wheeler earned second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.42. Wheeler followed up that performance with a third place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:06.33) and fourth in the 200 back (2:25.54). In the 100 free, Anderson finished in 1:02.76 for fifth place. Margaux McCartney earned top finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions, totaling 163.10 and 152.75 points, respectively.

Centenary College
The Ladies competed at Austin College this weekend, earning a fourth place finish out of five teams with 270 points. Alexandria Taylor picked up a win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:48.81. Chelsea Russell followed with a time of 2:20.67 to garner the 200-yard IM crown. Christy Wolterman finished up the final event win for the Ladies with a time of 12:03.61 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Wolterman and Russell teamed with Kayla Thornhill and Caitlyn Faulhaber to start things for the Ladies with a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:06.03. Wolterman and Taylor added a third and fourth place in the 200-yard free respectively with times of 2:14.18 and 2:16.24. Russell picked up a pair of second place finishes with times of 1:03.69 in the 100-backstroke and a 2:15.77 in the 200-back. Faulhaber, Thornhill and Russell along with Chloe Snow rounded out the women’s day with a third place finish in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:54.75.

Colorado College
The Tigers competed in a sprint meet in Honolulu, Hawai’I this weekend, defeating NCAA Division I Manhattan College 150-71. Megan Gillespie led the team with three individual wins, while Emily Harrison capture two of her own. Gillespie closed the meet with a dominating performance in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 2:22.61, more than 15 seconds over teammate Zoe Pierrat. Gillespie also won the 50-yard breaststroke in a time of 33.49 seconds and the 100-yeard breaststroke in 1:14.25. In addition, she swam the second leg of the meet-opening medley relay team that won with a time 2:00.33. Harrison, meanwhile, captured the 100-yard freestyle race in 58.70, just one-tenth of a second faster than senior Emma Holmes. Harrison also won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.44 and finished third in the 100-butterfly behind junior Olivia Dilorati (1:02.42) and freshman. Ellen Silk (1:02.82). Silk won the 50-yard butterfly in 28.99 seconds and swam the third leg of the winning medley relay team. Dilorati and freshman Justina Zuckerman also swam on the medley team.

McMurry University
McMurry's women won their first meet of the year with an impressive effort, using just six healthy swimmers in the meet. Robyn Remschel and Amber Garrett set the tone for the meet, each winning a pair of events. Remschel remained unbeaten in the backstroke, winning both the 100 back, in a time of 1:01.56, as well as the 200 back at 2:14.83.  Remschel was also third in the 50 free at 26.79 seconds. She swam the lead leg on both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, both of which placed second. Garrett led a 1-2 War Hawks' sweep in the 200 free – along with teammate Kelly McNamee – with a winning time of 2:10.12 minutes. McNamee touched at 2:12.41. Garrett also won the 400 IM with a time of 5:31.76, while also finishing second in the 500 free (5:56.17). McNamee was also third in the 200 backstroke (2:23.72), while also swimming the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay. Zandria Rodriguez was the runner-up in the 100 free (59.58) and the 100 breast (1:19.36). Samantha Spain was third in the 100 breast at 1:23.10. Both also swam on the 200 medley relay and Rodriguez took the anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay, as well. Sophomore Kelsey Frazier tied for second in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing at 1:08.90 minutes. Frazier was also on both of the runner-up relay quartets.

Southwestern University
The Pirates traveled to San Antonio to take on NCAA Division I University of Incarnate World this weekend, but fell 177-97. Madison Doty earned the first top three finish for the Pirates, finishing third in the 100 back with a time of 1:02.82. Natalie Lesnick and Ryann Lawley finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the same event. Marissa Byrd earned a fourth place finish in the 100 breast in a time of 1:14.74. The Pirates took second through seventh places in the 50 freestyle, with Marisa McCormack leading the way with a time of 26.06 seconds. Abby Miller led the divers for Southwestern, marking score of 179.85 in the 1-meter evetn. Haylee Knight and Delaney Dunley finished fifth and sixth in the same event. Doty and McCormack finished second (57.12) and third (59.27) in the 100 free, respectively. Lawley grabbed second in the 200 back, finishing in a time of 2:21.27. Taylor Adams led a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 breast stroke, finishing in a time of 2:40.71, with Byrd and Sarah Hachar behind her. Lesnick earned second place in the 500 free with a time of 5:38.71. Blythe Nava was the only Pirates’ swimmer to earn a top individual finish, taking first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:04.20. Kenly Gaynor and Marissa Rosa finished second and third in the event, respectively.
