Texas Lutheran's Vega, Trinity's Southwick/Lutz Selected to NCAA Women's Tennis Individual Field

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Texas Lutheran University’s Sofia Vega and the doubles pair of Marie Lutz and Liza Southwick from Trinity University were selected to the singles and doubles competition at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.

Vega will compete in her third consecutive singles championship this month, making the field of 32 after posting a 15-1 record in singles action this spring, while going 26-3 through the whole year. Vega is now 79-12 in singles play.

Southwick and Lutz are ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region, and have posted a 9-9 dual-match record at No. 1 doubles. Last fall, the two Tigers captured the ITA Southwest Region Doubles Championship. Southwick and Lutz advanced to the USTA/ITA National Small College Doubles Championship, where they won fifth place.

The individual championships shall consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.  The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on win-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

The team championship will take place May 18-20 and the individual championships May 21-23, both at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio and will be hosted by Ohio Northern University and Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The draw for the individual championship will be done by the women’s tennis committee and will be released on the last day of the team championship.

The 2014 singles title went to Gabrielle Clark of Emory. Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin of Amherst took the doubles title. Emory is the defending national champion, having defeated Amherst, 5-1, to claim the team title.
