Football Recap (Week 5) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The SCAC Football Record Book needs updating after some performances this past weekend.

Marquis Barrolle of Texas Lutheran put up a top five rushing performance in SCAC history while setting a school record in the process as the Bulldogs opened the season 5-0 for the second straight year.

Meanwhile, a non-conference clash between Austin College and Southwestern took place in Georgetown while Trinity was back on the road to battle Hardin-Simmons.

Austin College
For the third straight week, the 'Roos defense played strong and shut down the Southwestern Pirates (1-3) on their home field for a 20-13 victory on Saturday afternoon.

In a game that was close from start-to-finish, Austin College never surrendered the lead, starting the game with an 81-yard touchdown pass from Noah Jesko to Kyle Crawford. The Pirates tried to rally, but the 'Roos held strong to pick up their third straight win and move their record above .500.

Jesko finished 19-for-29 with 245 yards and a score. Crawford led all receivers with seven catches for 115 yards and a touchdown while Travis McClinton added six catches for 69 yards. Madison Ross led the rushing attacked with 71 yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, Jantzen Foster led the way with nine tackles while Scott Loy and Tre Stewart each had a sack. Brett H. Vaughn had the only turnover of the day, picking off a pass.

Austin College (3-2) will enter its bye week this coming weekend, but return to action on October 18th as they take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (0-4) in Waxahachie, Texas. 

Southwestern University
The Southwestern Pirates returned home on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed in Austin College (3-2) in a non-conference contest.

The Pirates tried to rally, but would come up just short to the 'Roos, falling 20-13. It looked as if the game was heading towards a shootout as Austin College took a 14-10 lead into half, but it turned into a game of field goals in the second half as both defenses rose to the occasion, shutting down the opposing offenses. 

Southwestern was without Bryan Hicks again as Justin Pelt took the reins at quarterback. He finished 14-for-23 on the day for 194 yards and a touchdown. Micah Sherman led the receiving group with five catches for 63 yards while John Free added four catches for 54 yards. Nik Kelly, a defensive back, had one catch for 38 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Wilburn led the rushing attack with 137 yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, A.J. McCourt led the attack with eight tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Tanner Rogers had a sack while Justin Broussard and Cody Schindler each added half a sack.

Southwestern (1-3) will remain at home as they welcome in Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-2) at 1 p.m. next Saturday.

Texas Lutheran University
Texas Lutheran, ranked No. 20 in the nation (AFCA), concluded their four game roadtrip with a dominating 54-27 victory over Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon. 

The Bulldogs came out hot out of the gate, scoring 33 points in the first half to take a 33-13 lead and completely controlling the game throughout the second half.

Marquis Barrolle set a new school record with 288 yards on 23 carries and two scores including a 90-yard touchdown run in the second half. His 288 yards are fifth all-time in a single game in SCAC history and his 90-yard score is also fifth all-time in SCAC history. Barrolle has 905 yards rushing through five games in 2014.

Trent White finished 24-for-36 with 260 yards passing with two touchdowns. Caleb Oliver led al receivers with six catches for 72 yards and a score while Lewis Williams II had the other touchdown reception. Defensively, Michael Wall led the way with 13 tackles while Drake Dowling, Adam McGuire, and Jordan Sims all had interceptions including a 95-yard touchdown return by Sims. Sims interception return ranks sixth all-time in SCAC football history.

Texas Lutheran (5-0) finally returns home this upcoming weekend for Homecoming, as they welcome in East Texas Baptist (3-1).

Trinity University
The Trinity Tigers returned to the road this past weekend, heading up to Abilene to take on Hardin-Simmons (3-1). 

The Tigers fell behind early and could not ever catch up, falling to the Cowboys 42-17 this past Saturday. 

Jeremy Simmons finished with 14 carries for 83 yards including a touchdown on the day. Mason Blaschke finished 9-for-22 through the air for 124 yards while Robert Broyles entered, going 8-for-18 including 145 yards through the air and a touchdown. Gordon LeAndrew led the way offensively with four catches for 137 yards.

Defensively, Julian Turner led the way with 11 tackles and a tackle for loss while Martel Matthews had 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Jai Boatman had six tackles and a fumble recovery. 

Trinity (1-4) returns home this upcoming weekend as they welcome in the University of Chicago (4-0).
