Men's Soccer Recap (Week 8) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All eight of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer teams were in action this weekend for another round of conference matches.

Austin College picked up their first win of the season in a 3-2 defeat of Centenary College Sunday. They also recorded a 2-2 draw with the No. 14 Colorado College Tigers on Friday.

The No. 3 Trinity University Tigers extended their win streak with two wins this weekend over Texas Lutheran University and Schreiner University. The Tigers are currently 11-0 in conference play and 15-1 overall for the year and have clinched the top seed for the 2014 SCAC Men's Soccer Championship - which will be contested Nov. 7-9 at Texas Lutheran.

Colorado College is still holding onto second place with a 7-2-2 record in the SCAC and an 11-3-2 record overall. Southwestern University and the University of Dallas are in a close battle for third place, as they both have five wins.

Non-Conference Games

Hendrix 2, Centenary 1
The Centenary Gents hosted a non-conference match against Hendrix College Tuesday evening, but fell 2-1 to the Warriors. HC was able to put up a quick goal in the third minute of the game, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Just out of the break, HC marked another goal, in the 50th minute. Centenary's Zach Kidder scored the Gents' lone goal in the 55th minute off of an assist from Ivan Amaya, but the Gents were not able to score again, despite outshooting the Warriors 25-10.

 

Conference Games

Texas Lutheran 3, Southwestern 2
TLU and Southwestern battled each other Friday afternoon, ending in an overtime 3-2 win for the Pirates. TLU's Alejandro Martinez marked the golden goal in the 96th minute. This was Martinez's second goal on the day, as he put in the only goal of the first half, just ten seconds before the break. Lalo Ramirez of TLU gave the Bulldogs their second goal in the 84th minute, for a 2-0 lead. The Pirates struck back twice within five minutes to tie the game at two apiece. Clay Martin scored  the first goal off of an assist from Zach Faulkner and with 26 seconds remaining in the game, Michael Olivares stole the pass and beat the goalkeeper to the ball for an equalizer. TLU was able to mark three shots in the overtime period, but didn't allow the Pirates to take any, earning the Bulldogs their fourth win in the SCAC.

Dallas 2, Centenary 0
Matthew Wise led the Dallas Crusaders to a 2-0 win over Centenary College this weekend. The Crusaders outshot the Gents 30-9, with Wise connecting on two penalty kicks for both of UD's goals. Centenary goalkeeper Rylan Whan marked eight saves on the day, while the pair of PJ Hasson and Tino Gamueda for UD put up three total saves. In addition to his two goals, Wise marked nine shots in the game, four on target.

Trinity 3, Schreiner 0
Despite holding the No. 3 Trinity Tigers scoreless through the first 43 minutes of play, TU's Zacharias Edholm scored the eventual game winner just before halftime to defeat the Schreiner Mountaineers 3-0 Friday afternoon.  Edholm completed his hat trick with two goals in the 78th minute. The goals came within just nine seconds of each other off of assists from Callum Squires and Victor Araujo. The Tigers allowed just one shot from the Mountaineers, while putting up 16 of their own. Schreiner goalkeeper marked 7 saves on the day, but allowed three shots to pass him.

Colorado College 1, Austin 1 (2OT)
The Colorado College Tigers and the Austin College 'Roos ended a double-overtime thriller in a 1-1 tie Friday afternoon. CC's Brandon Ogilvie put in the game's first goal in the 11th minute, which held until AC's Seth Windsor got the equalizer in the 78th minute off of an assist from Matt Rowlands. The Tigers held a 23-3 shot advantage in the game, but put just five of those shots on target. AC goalkeeper Andrew Celio marked four saves in the game, while CC's keeper, Theo Hooker, recorded just one.

Austin 3, Centenary 2
The 'Roos of Austin College picked up their first win of the season on Sunday, defeating the Centenary Gents 3-2. Centenary's Jeremy Klespis gave the team an early 2-0 lead after marking goals in the 18th and 29th minutes, but Austin's Roberto Varela scored in the 45th minute to cut the lead to 2-1 going into the break. In the 63rd minute, Chris Abad-Jacobi scored the equalizer off of an assist from Roberto Varela and Sabastian Iribarren, and followed it up with the game-winner just 1:07 later. While the 'Roos outshot the Gents 19-12, both teams recorded just six shots on goal. Celio put up four saves for AC, while Whan marked three for the Gents.

Trinity 2, Texas Lutheran 1
The Trinity Tigers improved to 11-0 in the SCAC with a 2-1 win over Texas Lutheran Sunday. Roberto Camargo marked the first goal of the game in the 14th minute off of a corner kick, but in the 40th minute, TLU's Lalo Ramirez put in the equalizer for a 1-1 score going into halftime. Victor Araujo marked the game-winner in the 51st minute off of an assist from Brent Mandlekorn. Trinity goalkeeper Matt Cardone faced just two shots on the day, recording one save. TLU's keeper Jonathan Michael marked five saves.

Colorado College 2, Dallas 2 (2OT)
The CC Tigers marked their second straight draw this weekend against the UD Crusaders in a double-overtime battle. Neither team was able to score through the first half, despite nine total shot attempts. Colton Allen marked both of UD's goals, scoring the first in the 59th minute. CC's Stuart Beezley was able to tie it back up at one apiece in the 69th minute. Allen gave Dallas the lead once again in the 75th minute, but a penalty kick from Tigers' Max Grossenbacher in the 78th minute made it an even game again. The Tigers outshot the Crusaders 26-12, but UD's pair of keepers put up six saves to keep the score even.

Schreiner 1, Southwestern 0
The Mountaineers earned a win this weekend against the Pirates. After a scoreless first half, Schreiner's Gregg Guittierez scored the eventual game winner in the 60th minute. The Pirates outshot the Mountaineers 14-3, but couldn't connect, putting just four shots on goal. Schreiner's goalkeeper Blake Lawson marked three saves on the day.
