Trinity Women's Tennis Defeats UT-Tyler to Advance to Second Round at NCAA Championship

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the fourth year in a row, the Trinity University women’s tennis team will make an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship.

The Tigers (11-8) defeated the University of Texas-Tyler 5-0 in the first round of the tournament to advance to Saturday’s competition. They got things started quickly by taking all three doubles matches to post a 3-0 lead heading into singles.

Marie Lutz and Liza Southwick teamed up in the top singles line, defeating the Patriots 8-5. Gabrielle Roe and Caroline White took the second line 8-4, while Cheyenne Duncan and Blaire Porter finished out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory in the third line.

The Tigers took the first set in five of six singles matches, but White and Porter were able to close theirs out quickly in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, to finish the decision.

Trinity will advance to the second round to play host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Saturday at noon.
