Top Seeds Post Wins on First Day of SCAC Women's Tennis Championship

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Second-seeded Schreiner University, third-seeded Colorado College and fourth-seeded Texas Lutheran University each posted first round wins Friday afternoon at the 2015 SCAC Women's Tennis Championship. Championship Website | Interactive Bracket | Photo Gallery

In the first match, the Schreiner University women defeated Centenary College 5-0. The Mountaineers swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead, not giving up a single game. In singles play, the it took just two matches for the Mountaineers to pull out a victory as Leanna Haynes and Alex Wheeler each posted dominating wins to close it out. In the second match of the day, Colorado College took down Austin College 5-0. Despite the shutout, Austin put up tough competion. The Tigers swept doubles action, and took the top two singles matches for the win. Closing the afternoon out was Texas Lutheran University. The Bulldogs took down host school Southwestern University 5-1 in the longest match of the day. TLU held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play as the top team of Sofia Vega and Allison McLain won 8-0 and Caitlin Zarr/Joni Baxley (No. 3) took their match 8-5. The Bulldogs earned wins in the top three singles spots to earn the team win, but the Pirates were challenging them throughout, including forcing a third set tiebreaker in the No. 3 match. SCAC championship play resumes on Saturday as top-seeded Trinity University takes on Texas Lutheran in one women's semifinal and Schreiner battles Colorado College in the other. Both matches are slated for 9 a.m. starts.

Also, Austin College and Centenary will play in a consolation match at 9 a.m. with the winner advancing to take on Southwestern at 2 p.m. in the fifth-place match. These consolation matches will take place at East View High School.
