Men's Soccer Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All eight of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer teams were in action this week, finishing up the second-to-last weekend of conference play.

After clinching the top seed in the SCAC tournament, the No. 2 Trinity Tigers earned two more wins this weekend, defeating Austin College and the University of Dallas.

The No. 17 Colorado College Tigers Clinched the No. 2 seed for the SCAC tournament with two wins this weekend.

In the matchup between Trinity and Austin College, two SCAC records were broken. AC goalkeeper Andrew Celio marked 22 saves, improving on the previous record held by Shane Olson of Oglethorpe University from1997. The Tigers put up a record –breaking 54 shots in the game, passing the previous record held by Olglethorpe's 2004 team with 50 shots.

 

Non-Conference Games:

Centenary 0, Louisiana College 1
The Gents played host to Louisiana College Tuesday evening, but fell to the non-conference opponent 0-1. LC outshot the Gents 18-9, putting eight on target. Centenary goalkeeper Andrew Brehm marked seven saves on the day. Gabe Zahm led the Gents with three shots, putting one on target. The Gents' defense held strong, not allowing a goal until the eventual game-winner was scored by LC in the 80th minute.

 

Conference Games:

 Austin College 1, Dallas 2
The University of Dallas Crusaders earned their sixth win in conference play this weekend, defeating the Austin College 'Roos 2-1 on the road. Nathan Nwaeze scored the game's first goal in the 37th minute off of an assist from Ben Mannings, but Gideon Ibemere put in an equalizer in the 74th minute. With just under four minutes remaining in the game, Nwaeze found Barton Holdridge for a goal to earn the win. The Crusaders held a 24-13 shooting advantage in the game, putting 11 of their shots on goal. Austin College goalkeeper Andrew Celio marked nine saves on the day, while the pair of Tino Gamueda and PJ Hasson for UD put up seven total saves.

Schreiner 0, Colorado College 2
The Colorado College Tigers returned home this weekend to host Schreiner University Friday, earning a 2-0 win. The Tigers defense held the Mountaineers to just one total shot, while allowing the CC offense to put up 33 shots, 13 on target. Schreiner goalkeeper Blake Lawson marked 11 saves on the day. Stuart Beezley and Max Grossenbacher led all players with seven shots apiece, while Beezley marked the eventual game-winner in the 28th minute. Brian Rubin added an insurance goal in the 70th minute off of an assist from Beezley. SU's Rena Pena marked the team's only shot on the day.

Texas Lutheran 1, Centenary 0
The Bulldogs began their weekend with a win over Centenary College Friday, defeating the Gents 1-0. The Bulldogs outshot the Gents 16-2, putting five shots on goal in the game, while the Gents had none on target. The game remained without a score until Isaac Lopez put in the game-winner in the 88th minute for the Bulldogs. Lopez led all players in the game with five shots, putting two on target. Michael Pullano and Jason Aiken marked the Gents' only shots in the game. Centenary goalkeeper Rylan Whan put up four saves on the day.

Trinity 9, Austin College 0
The Trinity Tigers continued their unbeaten streak in conference play with a win at home against Austin College this weekend. The Tigers fired off 54 shots, 29 on target, while holding the 'Roos to just 5 shots. AC's goalkeeper Celio marked 22 saves on the day. Victor Araujo led both teams with 11 shots, five on goal, while Johnny Lawson put up nine shots. Lawson marked the eventual game-winner in the 29th minute, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead heading into the break. Callum Squires added a goal of his own in the 63rd minute to begin the team's second half scoring drive. Four minutes later, Lawson marked his second goal of the day. Araujo put in a goal in the 72nd minute before Murray Fraser and Todd Edwards finished the scoring for the team with goals in the 81st and 89th minutes, respectively.

Dallas 0, Southwestern 2
The Pirates earned a win over the UD Crusaders this weekend, defeating them 2-0 after two first half goals. Andres Carreno-Mende earned his seventh goal of the season and the eventual game-winner in the 12th minute off of an assist from Christian Lopez. Michael Olivares added an insurance goal in the 31st minute. The Pirates defense held the Crusader to just four shots on the day, while the SU offense put up 14. The pair of Gamueda and Hasson in goal for the Crusaders marked four total saves, facing six shots.

Austin College 1, Southwestern 2
The Southwestern Pirates earned their second win of the weekend with a 2-1 defeat of the Austin College 'Roos Sunday. SU's Carreno-Mende had his second goal of the weekend to give the Pirates an early lead in the 26th minute. Garhett Bonneaux put in the team's second goal in the 58th minute, before Austin College's Thomas Quick marked a goal of his own to cut the Pirates' lead to one point, however the 'Roos couldn't produce another goal through the last eight minutes of the game. The teams each put up 11 shots, with Southwestern putting five on goal and Austin College putting four. AC goalkeeper Celio marked three saves on the day, while Southwestern keeper put up the same number.

Trinity 4, Dallas 0
The Trinity Tigers earned their 13th win in SCAC play with a 4-0 defeat of the Dallas Crusaders. Trinity outshot Dallas 35-7, putting 13 shots on target. Hasson, Gamueda and Patrick Fanizza marked a collective nine saves for the Crusaders. While three goalies split time in the net for Trinity, Matt Cardone was the only one to face any shots, putting up two saves. UD's Aaron Hegemann and Nwaeze each put up a team-leading two shots in the game. Zacharias Edholm put in the first shot of the game in the 12th minute before assisting on the next goal by Johnny Lawson in the 16th minute. Dylan Blumberg marked the final goal of the first half off of an assist by Brent Mandelkorn. Claudio Calistri put in the game's final goal in the 60th minute off of an assist from Daniel Ruano.

Schreiner 2, Centenary 1
The Mountaineers earned their fifth win of the season, defeating the Centenary Gents 2-1 Sunday. Centenary's Zach Kidder, Jeremy Klespis and Jason Aiken each marked three shots in the game, but it was Michael Pullano's one shot that gave the Gents their only goal of the day in the seventh minute. Schreiner's Justin Edwards put in the equalizer in the 47th minute off of an assist from Rene Pena, before Dakota Pebworth marked the game-winner in the 61st minute, assisted by Pena. Chase Smith led the Mountaineers with five shots on the day. Schreiner goalkeeper Blake Lawson put up six saves on the day, while Centenary keeper Rylan Whan marked eight.

Texas Lutheran 0, Colorado College 1
The TLU Bulldogs held the Colorado College Tigers to just one goal, while getting outshot 20-7. Colorado goalkeeper Theo Hooker earned his tenth win of the season in the net marking two saves. Jonathan Michael, the keeper for TLU, put up seven saves on the day, facing eight shots. Caden Mackenzie led all players with six shots on the day, but it was Max Grossenbacher who picked up his seventh goal of the season in the 71st minute to win the game.
