Men's Golf Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Five of the six Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's golf teams competed this week at the West Region Invitational hosted by Southwestern University.

Four SCAC teams swept the top four spots in the competition, led by Schreiner University who earned their fourth win in as many tournaments. Southwestern took second place, Trinity University came in third and Texas Lutheran finished fourth.

The University of Dallas also competed at the event, taking seventh place.

University of Dallas
The Crusaders posted a seventh place finish at the West Region Invitational in Georgetown this week. UD came in behind five nationally-ranked teams, including four from the SCAC. Chris Eckes led the team in a tie for 15th place, shooting a three-round score of 234 (84, 74, 76). Coming in behind Eckes was teammate Matthew Nickel. Nickel finished 39th in the field, shooting a 275 (97, 86, 92). Michael Sarrat and Chris Sarrat rounded out the team, taking 40th and 41st place, respectively, with marks of 306 and 345 through the competition.

Schreiner University
The No. 6 Mountaineers posted their fourth win of the spring season at the West Region Invitational as they took down four nationally-ranked teams. Schreiner got off to a hot start, taking a 10 shot lead after the first round, posting a score of 298. While other teams moved around, the Mountaineers stayed firmly atop the standings, finishing with a mark of 910 (298, 304, 308) to earn the title. Cheyne Kendall led the team in a tie for second place, posting a score of 221 (71, 76, 74). He was followed by Matt McClung who took seventh place, shooting a 226 (74, 74, 78) and Jimmy Keener who posted a 232 (75, 82, 75). Phillip Stewart rounded out the scorers for Schreiner in 18th place, shooting a 236 (80, 75, 81).

Southwestern University
The No. 13 Pirates had a strong finish at the West Region Invitational, earning second place after posting the lowest team round of the competition through the final 18. Southwestern finished with a total score of 919, just nine shots out of the top spot. After finishing the first day in fourth place, the Pirates shot a 295 on the final day to jump two spots. Sutherland Stith led the team in a tie for fifth place, shooting a 225 (80, 73, 72). Cody Hebert and Jordan Cowart finished one shot apart for 10th and 11th place, respectively. Hebert led the pair with a 229. To round out the scoring, Tyler Gammill an Connor Murphy tied for 21st place, shooting a 239.

Texas Lutheran University
The No. 16 Bulldogs took fourth place in the West Region Invitational this week, finishing with a three-round score of 924, just five shots out of second place. Adam Peterson led the team, finishing with the tournament's lowest individual round to come back and take his third consecutive title. Peterson improved steadily each day after finishing in a tie for 12th through the first round and tied for fifth after Monday's competition. Tuesday, Peterson posted the only sub-70 score, 69, to earn a two-stroke win. Taner Zimmerhanzel followed Peterson in a tie for 11th place, shooting a 230 (73, 80, 77), while Kraig Zimmerhanzel finished in a tie for 15th, marking a 234 (80, 80, 74). Wyatt Blezinger rounded out the scorers in a tie for 27th place, shooting a 243 (84, 80, 79), while Trey Davila finished in a tie for 31st.

Trinity University
The No. 17 Tigers took third place at the West Region Invitational, posting a team score of 922 (314, 307, 301). Redmond Lyons finished the Invitational in a tie for fifth place, shooting a 225 (74, 77, 74). Kalen Vos also posted a top-10 finish, taking eighth place with a mark of 227 (75, 76, 76). Diego Trevino came in 14th place in the competition, rallying through the final 18 to jump eight spots after being tied for 22nd through day one. Will Street and Alex Hartzell finished one shot apart for 25th and 26th places, respectively.
