Men's Soccer Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The conference match-up between Austin College and the University of Dallas set for Friday, September 12 was postponed due to inclement weather.

Colorado College posted two shutouts this weekend, winning both matches by at least four points.

Trinity improved to 4-1-0 with two high-scoring wins this week.

Austin College
The 'Roos battled against the University of Texas-Dallas this weekend, ending the match in a 3-3 double-overtime draw, bringing the team record to 0-3-2. Thomas quick scored a goal in the 43rd minute to end the half with a 1-1 tie. Chris Abad-Jacobi scored early in the second half, giving the 'Roos their first lead of the game. The Comets came back shortly after to tie it up and took a lead in the 74th minute with their third score of the game. Less than three minutes later, Quick got his second goal of the game, tying the match up once again. The Comets held a 28-9 shot advantage, but goalkeeper Andrew Celio marked six saves on the day to help the 'Roos to a draw.

Centenary College
The Gents traveled to Colorado Springs this weekend, taking on the No. 24 Colorado College in the first conference match-up of the season. The team fell 4-0 to the Tigers, moving to 2-1-0 overall. Goalkeeper Rylan Whan recorded six saves on the day. The Gents were only able to get three shots off in the game, two coming from Jason Aiken. A day later, the Gents rallied to beat Concordia (MN) 2-1 and improved to 3-1-0 this season, the team's best start since 1997. Concordia scored the first goal in the first half, and held the lead for about 20 minutes before Zach Kidder scored the Gents' first goal off of an assist rom Jason Aiken. Aiken has all three of the team's assists this season. In the 85th minute, Jeremy Klespis scored the game-winning goal, unassisted.

Colorado College
The No. 24 Tigers had a successful weekend, scoring 10 total goals between two matches and shutting out both Centenary College and Concordia College (MN). Friday, the Tigers battled the Gents in their first conference meeting. Seth Newby marked two goals in the first half, getting assists from Caden MacKenzie and Max Grossenbacher. In the second half, Sam Markin scored his first two goals of the season, giving the Tigers a 4-0 win. The Tigers' defense only allowed Centenary to take three shots, none on goal. Sunday, the Tigers recorded another big win over Concordia, as Brandon Ogilvie marked his second career hat-trick in the 6-0 win over the Cobbers. MacKenzie recorded the first and the last goals in the game, his first two of the season. Ogilvie scored three goals in a 14 minute period, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead before a 55-yard shot by Tim Huettel with one second left in the first half sent them into the break with a five-point lead. The Tigers outshot the Cobbers 33-4 in the game.

University of Dallas
The Crusaders took on Howard Payne this weekend, falling 0-1 in the first overtime period. Goalkeepers Tino Gamueda and P.J. Hasson teamed up for five saves in the game. Colton Allen recorded six shots, three on goal, to lead the Crusaders while Matthew Wise marked four shots himself. The Crusaders are now 4-1 on the season.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers picked up their first loss of the season this weekend against conference opponent Texas Lutheran University. Schreiner was able to put up eight shots in the match, but couldn't get past the TLU goalkeeper. Gregg Guittierez and Chase Smith each recorded two shots to lead the team. Both of Smith's attempts were on target. Goalkeeper Blake Lawson wasn't able to save either of the shots from TLU.

Southwestern University
In the SCAC opener, the Southwestern Pirates took on No. 4 Trinity University Wednesday, falling 7-1 to the Tigers. After getting down 5-0 in the 55th minute, Michael Olivares was able to send in a goal in the 62nd minute to stop a shutout. The Tigers outshot the Pirates 17-7. Goalkeeper Travis Carmichael recorded five saves in the game. The Pirates took on No. 6 Christopher Newport Sunday, but fell 4-2. Southwestern trailed by just one point at halftime, but a combined five goals in the second half didn't go in the Pirates favor. Andres Carreno-Mende recorded both of the Pirates goals in the game, only six minutes apart. Carreno-Mende also led the team with three shots. Carmichael recorded 11 saves in the goal, but it still wasn't enough to control the opposition.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs improve to 3-1-1 on the year with a win this weekend in the first conference match-up of the year. Goalkeeper Jonathan Michael recorded a second straight shutout, helping TLU to a 2-0 win over Schreiner University. This is the Bulldogs' fourth shutout in five games. Nathan Drouillard and Isaac Lopez recorded the Bulldogs' two goals, each recording two shots in the game. Drouillard's goal came in the 10th minute off of a header with an assist by Lopez. Lopez marked his penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute.

Trinity University
The No. 4 Tigers opened up the conference season in an impressive fashion, taking down Southwestern University 7-1 on the road. Trinity recorded 17 shots in the game, 12 on goal and connected with all but five of them. Johnny Lawson marked the first points for the Tigers, scoring in the ninth minute. Zacharias Edholm marked the next two goals, before Steven Gaunt closed off the first half with his goal in the 38th minute. After the break, the Tigers allowed one goal from the Pirates in the 62nd minute, but marked two more of their own right after for the win. Goalkeeper Matt Cardone played 45 minutes, recording three saves. Saturday, the Tigers took on No. 6 Christopher Newport, earning their fourth win of the season with a 5-3 win. Lawson got things started again, scoring the game's first goal in the 16th minute off of an assists by Goncalo Santana. Santana added his own goal six minutes later with an assists from Lawson. Zacharias Edholm recorded a goal in the 35th minute, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead at halftime. CNU struck two minutes into the second half, but Trinity replied two minutes later as Tom Carwile scored a goal off of an assist by Santana. Lawson scored his second goal of the game with Santana's third and final assist of the game, giving Trinity a 5-2 lead in the 72nd minute. CNU scored one more goal but it wasn't enough to take down the Tigers. Cardone recorded six saves in the game.
