Men's Track & Field Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s track & field teams competed this week.

Trinity University and Texas Lutheran University both traveled to Division I Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi to compete in the Islanders Open, facing members across all NCAA Divisions.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs headed to Corpus Christi this weekend for the Islander Open. In the 400 meter dash, Marquis Brown took the top spot, finishing in 49.46 seconds. This was the best among non-Division I competitors and would have ranked second among all competitors in the event. Donald Manuszewski took sixth in the 800 meter run to lead the Bulldogs before finishing fifth in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:19.85. A trio of Bulldogs took second, third and fourth place in the 2000 meter steeplechase, led by Travis Koenig in second. Koenig posted a time of 7:07.67, while he was followed by Bond Birkner in third (7:17.18) and Matthew Villarreal with a time of 7:26.05. In the 7000 meter run, Jonathan Beal and Blake Westbrook took third and fourth with times of 25:18.50 and 25:20.20, respectively. Jonathan Hilman took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.13) and second in the 400 meter event (1:01.94). During field events, Reggie Scott started things off for TLU with a fifth place finish in the long-jump with a mark of 6.00 meters. He was followed by teammate Corbin Grobe with a mark of 5.94. Alejandro Briseno took second in the shot put with a toss of 12.72 meters and Cody Thornburg took seventh in the discus (39.50 meters). In the hammer throw, Ethan Powell posted a throw of 30.55 meters to finish in third place, while Briseno came in fourth (25.87 meters). In the final men’s event of the day, javelin, Grobe took fourth with a mark of 38.79 meters.

Trinity University
The Tigers took on competition among all three NCAA divisions at the Islander Open this week. Ian Plantz posted the Tigers first top-three finish of the day, finishing the 800 meter event with a time of 1:59.46. This was third among non-Division I competitors, and would have finished fourth among the DI field. Teammate Kirk Gulliver followed closely behind in fourth place with a time of 2:00.70. In the 110 meter hurdles, Cody Hall took second place with a time of 15.01 seconds, this was second among all competitors and second among non-Division I runners. In the field events, Louie Montoto took the top spot in the men’s high jump (1.85 meters) before Lars Besselaar finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.80 meters. Montoto also competed in the long jump. Finishing fourth with a distance of 6.10 meters. Stephen Mason led the team in the shot put, marking a toss of 12.09 meters and Matt Love took fourth in the discus (44.61 meters).
