LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Texas Lutheran had a huge weekend on the west coast, finishing 3-1 including an upset victory over 18th-ranked Chapman, 3-1. Junior Vanecia Spencer had 19 kills en rout to the upset as the Bulldogs go to 5-2 on the year.

The Austin College volleyball team split its
four matches at the 18th Annual Austin College Classic over the
weekend, falling 3-0 to Wheaton College and 3-1 to Southwestern
Assemblies of God while topping Sul Ross State and Concordia by
scores of 3-0. Shelby Eaves continued her strong start to the
season, averaging 4.38 kills and 2.15 digs per set with a .214
hitting percentage, and Bekah Newberry averaged 2.31 kills with a
.361 hitting percentage. Kelsey Klingler averaged a team-best 8.67
assists per set and added 2.5 digs, and Rachel Fusselman added a
team-best 3.23 digs per set with only three reception errors.
Alyssa Pruett also had eight service aces and averaged 3.0 digs per
set in the four matches. This weekend the ‘Roos travel to
Memphis to participate in the Rhodes College Invitational.
The Centenary volleyball team dropped four
outings at the UT-Tyler Invitational. Beth Nuttall finished the
tournament with 84 assists while Sarah Irons paced the squad with
32 kills. Sarah Sumner led the defensive effort with 36 digs for
the two-day event. Brooke Bahlinger ranked second on the squad in
kills and digs with 29 and 34 respectively. Centenary returns to
action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as the Ladies travel to LeTourneau
University. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
No. 17 Colorado College captured the 2013 Molten Volleyball CC Classic by winning all four matches in straight sets. The Tigers have now swept seven of eight opponents this season and it marks the second time in three seasons Colorado College has opened a season with an 8-0 record. CC won nine consecutive matches to start the 2011 campaign. Freshman outside hitter Abbe Holtze was voted MVP by the opposing coaches, while sophomore opposite hitter Courtney Birkett and sophomore setter Devon Lucero also were named to the all-tournament team. In Friday’s first match, the Tigers held Lakeland College to a negative hitting percentage (.090) for the second time this season. Sophomore middle hitter Kaimara Herron hit .500 with nine kills on 16 attacks, all of which were career highs, against Bridgewater College. Holtze posted a season-high 20 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Emily Phillips recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs, as Colorado College earned a berth in the championship match with a 3-0 triumph against the Willamette. The Tigers won their second straight tournament with a second sweep of the Bearcats. Junior middle hitter Kristen Liberty and Birkett led CC’s balanced attack with 10 kills, while sophomore libero Sophie Merrifield tallied 26 digs for the second match in a row. Colorado College goes on the road for the first time this season for the 2013 Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Tournament at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The Tigers will play matches against St. Olaf College and Knox College on Saturday, as well as Beloit College and Lawrence University on Sunday.
The University of Dallas volleyball team went 1-3 on the week in the Austin College Invitational. On Friday in Sherman, Texas, the Crusaders won 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 14-25, 25-23) over Southwestern Assemblies of God University before falling 3-2 (27-29, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-9) to Concordia University. Saturday brought a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-11) loss to Wheaton College (Ill.) and a 3-2 defeat to Bacone College (Okla.) for head coach Amy Byfield's squad. Dallas will head to Concordia, Neb., for two matches Saturday -- Concordia University (12 p.m.), Presentation College-S.D. (2 p.m.).
Schreiner went 0-4 on the weekend in
California. On Friday, Schreiner took on Occidental and the
Redlands and were defeated in both matches, 3-0. Against UC-Santa
Cruz and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, SU lost 3-0 and 3-1. Schreiner
will host to Sul Ross State on Wednesday and will travel to Seguin
to take on UT-Dallas and Concordia on Saturday.
Southwestern had a huge weekend and didn't drop a
single set as they won 3-0 against all four opponents. SU opened
with Southwestern Assemblies of God and got stronger as the match
went on, winning 25-22, 25-18, 25-11, and continued their strong
play against Bacone College to win 26-18, 25-21, 25-19. As day two
got underway the Pirates easily handled Wheaton College 25-15,
25-22, 25-18 before closing out the weekend with an easy 25-11,
25-21, 25-14 win over Sul Ross. Southwestern remains on the road to
face some of the top teams in the nation in Atlanta, Georgia. The
Pirates face Cal Lutheran, Emory, Millsaps and Christopher Newport
at Emory.
The Texas Lutheran Volleyball squad made it four
straight wins after taking down both Hendrix College and
Pomona-Pitzer in the first day of the California Lutheran
Invitational on Friday. In the tournament's opening match against
Hendrix, Texas Lutheran was paced by Vanecia Spencer
(Grandview, Texas), who finished with 16 kills on .256 hitting. She
also tallied 1.5 blocks and two digs.In the Bulldogs' thrilling win
over Pomona-Pitzer, the team was led on offense, once again, by
Spencer. She was the only Bulldog to notch double-digit kills,
finishing with 11 of them on .175 hitting. Texas Lutheran
Volleyball bested No. 18 Chapman in a five-set thriller before
losing 3-0 to No. 10 California Lutheran in the final day of the
California Lutheran Invitational on Saturday.Texas Lutheran was
sharp from the get-go against the No. 18-ranked team in the
country. The Bulldogs took the opening two sets before Chapman
rebounded to win the next two. It all came down to a
winner-take-all fifth set and the Bulldogs proved up to the
challenge, thoroughly controlling the final frame and closing out
the upset. Vanecia Spencer (Grandview, Texas) was absolutely
dominant against Chapman, leading the Bulldogs with 19 kills. She
was extremely accurate with those attacks too, only making two
attack errors and hitting .330. She also chipped in with a block
and an assist.
Trinity went 4-1 over the weekend, with the only
loss coming at the hands of eighth-ranked Emory University on
Saturday. The Tigers scored 3-0 shutout wins over Maryville (TN)
and Virginia Wesleyan to open the Randolph-Macon Invitational, then
after falling to Emory, finished the tournament with a 3-1 over
Averett. Trinity then played against tournament hosts
Randolph-Macon on Sunday, taking another 3-0 victory. After two
weeks on the road, Trinity will play its first home matches of the
season this weekend at the Trinity National Invitational. The
Tigers will face Berry, Hardin-Simmons, Whitworth, and Chapman over
the two-day event.
