LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Trinity Tigers improved to 3-1 on the year as they picked up a non-conference win over Austin College. Meanwhile, Southwestern fell on the road and the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs saw their homecoming game called off due to inclement weather.

The Austin College football team was able to match Trinity in yardage and nearly did the same in time of possession, but the 'Roos were unable to capitalize inside the red zone in a 26-3 defeat on Saturday. The Tigers went on top 13-0 before an Andrew Klink 35 yard field goal made it 13-3 in the third quarter, but Trinity answered with two touchdowns to put the game out of reach by the start of the fourth. Madison Ross rushed 17 times for 60 yards and added four catches for 17 yards, and Gabe McCarthy had 53 reception yards for the 'Roos. Noah Jesko completed 17-of-35 passes for 159 yards and Brooks Ward made 13 tackles to lead the defense. Jake Price made seven tackles and recovered a fumble on special teams and also had a pass breakup. This week the 'Roos return to Sherman to host Southwestern on Saturday for Parent and Family Weekend at Austin College.
The Southwestern University football team scored 16 unanswered points to erase an early deficit on the road Saturday before falling to Hendrix College 48-29 in a battle of first-year programs. After spotting the Warriors (2-1) a 14-0 lead the Pirates (0-4) were able to get on the scoreboard when Laith Tucker connected on an 18-yard field goal. The field goal from Tucker sparked life into Southwestern as they responded quickly after a Brandon Hudson interception to take a 16-14 lead. Colten Shea battled double teams all afternoon, but fought off defenders to finish with 13 catch for 175 yards and three touchdowns. His three scores was one shy of tying a SCAC record as his 13 catches were also four catches away from a conference record. Southwestern would add a two more scores to pull within striking distance, but a blocked punt gave Hendrix excellent field position as they extended the lead to the final 48-29 score.
Texas Lutheran's Homecoming football game with Southwestern Assemblies of God was called after a three-hour weather delay Saturday evening at Seguin's Matador Stadium. The game was declared a no contest. The game, a non-conference contest, will not be rescheduled. At 6:55 p.m., the game was suspended with 14:15 remaining in the second quarter, with TLU holding a 14-7 lead after a pair of Brent Peavy (Houston/St. Pius X) touchdown passes. The teams never went back to the field as repeated lightning strikes in the area forced mandatory 30-minute delays. The game was called just after 10 p.m. after discussions between the two head coaches, Danny Padron of TLU and Jesse Godding of SAGU. The game did not meet the time limit for a full game. All statistics from the game will not be counted as official and will not be counted toward season totals. TLU (2-0, 2-0 SCAC) will return to the field next Saturday with a road game against East Texas Baptist University. Game time for the non-conference contest is set for 6 p.m. TLU will have a live video webcast for the game on tlubulldogs.com. Only two other players in school history (Jerheme Urban, Caleb Urban) have reached 1,000 yards in kickoff returns.The three points allowed by Trinity's defense was the fewest since a 10-3 win over Millsaps in 2011. The Tigers have allowed just nine points in the last two games. With the victory, Head Coach Steve Mohr now stands alone in third place among active Division III football coaches.Trinity will travel to Belton, Texas, to take on third-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor. The two teams have played eight times in their histories, with each team taking four wins. The Tigers have lost the last four meetings against the Crusaders, including last year's 49-28 defeat in San Antonio.
