INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division III
Women's Tennis Committee selected Texas Lutheran sophomore Sofia
Vega as one of 32 women's singles players for the 2014 NCAA
Division III Women's Tennis Championships.
Vega is the only Bulldog in school history to be selected to an
NCAA national tournament in women's or men's tennis, and now she
has accomplished the feat twice.
The individual championships will consist of 32 singles players
and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for
the championships are based on win-loss record, strength of
schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
The team championship will take place May 19-21, and the
individual championships will be played May 22-24.
Both championships will be held at the Biszantz Family Tennis
Center in Claremont, Calif. The championships will be hosted by
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Vega, an ITA All-American and NCAA DIII All-American in 2013, is
18-0 this spring and 27-3 overall (counting fall competition). On
Tuesday, she was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Women's Tennis Player-of-the-Year.
Vega is the top-ranked player in the NCAA Division III West Region
in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
After winning the 2013 ITA Southwest Region Singles Championship
in September, Vega finished fourth at the 2013 USTA/ITA National
Small College Championships in Fort Myers, Fla., in October.
Three of the four players Vega met in the USTA/ITA National Small
College Championships were named to the NCAA DIII singles field on
Wednesday. Courtney Lawless of Whitman (Wash.), Sonja Meighan of
Washington and Lee (Va.) and Megan Tang of University of Chicago
(Ill.) join Vega in the NCAA Championships.
In October, Vega defeated Lawless 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 in a national
quarterfinal match and lost to Meighan 6-2, 6-2 in the national
semifinal. Vega fell to Tang 7-5, 6-3 in the national third-place
match.
Last spring, Vega advanced to the NCAA DIII Women's Singles
Championship and played in the Round of 16 before losing to the
eventual national champion, Lok-Sze Leung of Middlebury (Vt.), 6-3,
6-1. Leung is not in the 2014 championship field.
The draw for the individual championship will be completed by the
women's tennis committee and will be released on the last day of
the team championship.
