Women's Soccer Recap (Week 10) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It was an exciting week for women's soccer since the final seedings for the SCAC Women's Soccer Conference Tournament were not set until the finish of the final matches of regular season play on Friday. Schreiner picked up a big win to keep their playoff chances alive; however, Centenary came through with a big win to punch their ticket to the SCAC Women's Soccer Conference Tournament for the No. 6 seed. The seeds are now set for the conference tournament bracket. The SCAC Women's Soccer Conference Tournament will be hosted by Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas on November 8th, 9th, and 10th.

 

AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College women's soccer team fell in its final two regular season matches of the season, falling 2-1 in overtime against Centenary and 2-0 to UC Santa Cruz to finish the regular season 6-12-1 overall. Against Centenary, the 'Roos took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of action on a goal by Dominique Martinez, and held that lead until late in the second half when Centenary equalized in the 78th minute to force overtime, and the Ladies scored in the 97th  minute to hand the 'Roos the loss. Against UCSC, the Banana Slugs tallied once in the first half and once again in the second half to give the 'Roos a loss in their final home game of the year. Emily Brockette had four saves against Centenary and two saves against UCSC.

Centenary
ended the regular season with a 2-1, overtime win at Austin College that placed the Ladies in the SCAC Championship. Centenary is slated to face Texas Lutheran at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. Madison Alexander provided both goals for the Ladies at AC as she joins teammate Carly Slovensky with multiple-goal efforts this season as is tied with Amanda Atwell for second on the team in scores on the campaign with three. Erica Coker collected her fifth win of the season shining in goal with 10 saves as AC attempted 23 shots on the day, including 11 on target.

The University of Dallas women's soccer team wrapped their 2013 regular-season schedule with a 2-0 defeat to the University of California-Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon in Irving, Texas. After a scoreless first-half, the Lady Banana Slugs scored in the 52nd and 60th-minute to disappoint Dallas on their senior day. Prior to the game, midfielders Michele Carpenter, Emily Rogers and goalkeeper Brigid Hasson had their career accomplishments detailed. Dallas enters the 2013 SCAC Women's Soccer Championship as the No. 5 seed. On Friday, in Seguin, Texas, they will combat fourth-seeded Austin College and former head coach Kristina Corona at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals hosted by Texas Lutheran.

The Schreiner Mountaineers were 1-0 on the week.  On Friday, Schreiner finished the season with 1-0 victory over Texas Lutheran.

The Southwestern women's soccer team ended the season at home against nationally-ranked Trinity on Friday night. The Tigers jumped out to a big lead in the first half that the Pirates were unable to recover from, falling 6-0. SU enters the SCAC Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. after receiving a first round bye.

The Texas Lutheran women's soccer scored a goal just a minute into action was enough to down the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team on Friday in a 1-0 road loss to Schreiner in the regular-season finale. Schreiner scored the game's only goal just a minute and 10 seconds into the game. Monique Hutcheson was the Mountaineer who scored what turned out the game winner. The goal was assisted by Gabrielle Watson. After allowing that early goal against Schreiner, the Bulldogs and Mountaineers played to a stalemate. The Bulldogs held the Mountaineers to just two more shots the rest of the way and ended up outshooting Schreiner 6-3 on the day.

No. 2 Trinity
extended its winning streak to 17 games with a pair of victories over Southwestern and UC-Santa Cruz this weekend. The Tigers opened the week with their final conference tilt, defeating Southwestern 6-0 in Georgetown, Texas.  Trinity then closed the regular season schedule with a 2-1 home win over UC-Santa Cruz on Sunday morning. Emily Jorgens broke Trinity's record for assists in a single season, picking up three in Friday's win over Southwestern to break the record.  She added another on Sunday, and has now helped on 22 goals for the Tigers this season.  The previous record of 20 assists was set by Erica Adelstein in 2002. Shelby Guenthardt picked up a pair of goals against the Pirates on Friday, increasing her career total to 49 goals.  She needs one more to become the fourth player ever to reach 50 in a career. Trinity had previously clinched the top seed for next weekend's SCAC Tournament, and will face either #4 Austin College or #5 Dallas in the SCAC Semifinals at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.  The winner of that game will play in Sunday's SCAC Championship, also at 1:00 p.m. Texas Lutheran is hosting the three-day event in Seguin, Texas. Trinity has won each of the past two SCAC Tournaments, and has won four consecutive conference championships.
