Trinity Men Open Up NCAA Play with Sweep Over Grinnell

ST. PETER, Minn, - The eighth-ranked Trinity men’s tennis team opened its part in the NCAA Division III Playoffs with a 5-0 second-round shutout over Grinnell College on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity (23-6), meets the host No. 14 Gustavus Adolphus College Gusties in the regional final at 12:00 p.m. Sunday. The winner advances to the NCAA team finals May 19-21 at Claremont, California. Gustavus Adolphus blanked the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-0 in the second round.

The Tigers won handily in all of their matches. Paxton Deuel and Nico Moreno improved to 17-10 after taking No. 1 doubles, for their 12th straight win. Jordan Mayer and Greg Haugen upped their record to 16-6 after a No. 2 line victory and an eighth consecutive victory. Charlie Curtis and Clayton Niess extended their winning streak to 13 matches and now stand at 15-1 after supplying the doubles sweep.

Deuel was first in the singles win column, taking the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-0. Deuel has now posted a 16-6 match record. The clincher for the Tigers came at No. 4 singles courtesy of Aaron Skinner.

Trinity Head Coach Russell McMindes is leading the Tigers in their fifth consecutive berth in the NCAA postseason event.
