Sammi Thiele, Austin College, Swimmer of the Week (Week 9)

SAMMI THIELE OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior from Keller, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for performances during meets swam Monday, January 8 to Sunday, January 14. SCAC Swimming & Diving Release (Week 9)

Thiele had four very solid swims against four other squads at the Austin College Invitational. Thiele swam a 1:08.33 in the breaststroke leg of the 400 medley relay, and posted first place individual finishes in the 100 back (59.77), 200 back (2:10.39), and 200 IM (2:16.03). 

Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore Alexis Lee of Colorado College was a standout performer for the Tigers in meets against three SCIAC opponents. In Saturday's double dual with Occidental and Chapman, she won all three of her individual events - touching first in the 200 back (2;10.03), the 100 back (1:00.19), and the 400 IM (4:46.88). Earlier in the week against Pomona-Pitzer, Lee was second in the 200 back (2:13.45) and third in the 100 back (1:01.67). Sophomore Madeline Rohrer of McMurry put forth performances at the Austin College Invitational that were instrumental in the team's second place finish at the meet. Rohrer took home first place in the 200 free and finished second in both the 50 and 100 free. Junior Emma Williams of Southwestern was part of the first-place 200 medley relay team (1:49.98) as she put together a strong anchor leg in Friday's dual meet against Incarnate Word. Individually, Williams placed second overall in both the 100 and 200 free. Junior Madeline Vacula of Centenary had an impressive week in a pair of meets for the Ladies, claiming three event wins on Wednesday at home against Millsaps. Vacula won the 200 free (2:11.81), 500 free (5:40.66), and 100 back (1:09.14), and was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay team that swam a time of 2:02.84. On Saturday in the Austin College Invitational, she had Centenary's best individual finish of the meet, taking second in the 1650 free with a time of 19:32.01. Vacula just missed a top-five finish in the 100 back, earning sixth place with a time of 1:11.01. First-year Ava Varrett of St. Thomas was first to touch the wall in the 100 breast, posting a time of 1:15:32 at the Austin College Invitational. She also finished third in the 100 fly at 1:06.79, good for the highest finish of any DIII swimmer in the race.
