Men's Soccer Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Dallas sits alone atop the SCAC Men's Soccer standings after picking up wins over LeTourneau, Rhodes, and Hendrix. The Crusaders defeated the YellowJackets 3-1 before returning for a pair of one goal wins to go to 4-0 on the year.

AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College men’s soccer team went 0-1-1 in its two matches over the weekend, being narrowly edged 1-0 against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday night before battling UT-Tyler to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon. Against UMHB, the game was scoreless until the 88th minute, when the Crusaders were able to get on the board with the game winner. On Sunday against a strong UTT side, Austin College put together a tremendous defensive effort to keep the Patriots off the board and earn the draw. Andrew Celio was outstanding in goal all weekend, playing all 200 minutes and allowing just the one goal, with a .857 save percentage and a 0.45 goals-against-average. This week the ‘Roos take on Centenary on Wednesday and UT-Dallas on Friday.

The Centenary men’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision on Thursday evening at Louisiana College. The Gents fall to 0-2 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 2-1. The Maroon and White faced a stingy, Wildcat defense that allowed just four Centenary shots on the night. Rykley Crowe, Gabriel Zahm, Jeremy Klespis and Joshua Lichtenwalner combined for the shots with Klespis and Zahm registering shots on goal. Austin Andrews (0-2) was saddled with the loss in net for the Gents allowing two goals in the opening half with four saves. Rylan Whan played the remaining 45 minutes surrendering two goals partnered with six saves. LC totaled 31 shots on the evening with 14 coming on goal. Centenary returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against Austin College. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener is slated for 7 p.m. at Mayo Field.

Colorado College gave up a pair of unorthodox goals in the second half on Friday and poof, just like that; both a lead and potential victory vanished. Capital University scored off a high bouncing punt in the 57th minute and knocked a ball loose from goalkeeper Ian Horne's grasp in the 64th, to steal a 2-1 victory in Delaware, Ohio. The loss overshadowed a first-half tally by senior forward Brandon Ogilvie, who scored for the first time since the 2011 season opener on a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Ogilvie was limited to only 12 games the last two seasons combined due to a pair of separate injuries. The Tigers finished with a 14-9 advantage in total shots and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. For 50 minutes on Saturday night, Colorado College went toe-to-toe with the Ohio Wesleyan University at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. The final 38 minutes were another story. The 10th-ranked Bishops struck for a pair of goals in a span of 7:04 to take a 4-2 lead with a little more than 30 minutes remaining in the contest, and then tacked on two more during the final 23 minutes to improve to 4-0 on the season. OWU took its first lead in the eighth minute, but sophomore midfielder Ryan Huettel lofted a shot over goalkeeper Colin Beemiller to tie the score a little more than eight minutes later. The Bishops took a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute, only to see junior midfielder Morgan Wack knot the score just over three minutes later with a shot that caromed off a defender. Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good 7:13 into the second half. Colorado College (0-2-1) plays host to Chapman University on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and opens conference play against the University of Dallas at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The University of Dallas men's soccer team (4-0) went 3-0 on the week to remain unscathed, notching wins over LeTourneau University, Rhodes College (Tenn.), and Hendrix College (Ark.). Tuesday in Irving, Texas, the Crusaders defeated LeTourneau, 3-1. Junior midfielder Nathan Nwaeze recorded two goals in the triumph, while freshman forward Barton Holdridge tallied the first of his career. Saturday in Memphis, Tenn., freshmen goalkeepers P.J. Hasson and Tino Gamueda combined for the shutout, while junior midfielder Aaron Hegemann netted the game-winner in a 1-0 showing over Rhodes. The victory gave head coach David Hoffmann the 100th of his career with Dallas. Sunday pitted the Crusaders versus Hendrix in a neutral-site affair at Rhodes. The navy and white prevailed 2-1 behind goals from junior midfielders Matt Wise and Juan Hernandez-Reyes. On tap this week for Dallas are two road contests -- Chapman University-Calif. (Saturday, 1 p.m. MDT), Colorado College (Sunday, 2 p.m. MDT). Both games will be played in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Schreiner went 0-2 on the week. On Friday, Schreiner traveled to Our Lady of the Lake and fell 7-1. Against Howard Payne on Sunday, Schreiner lost a tough 4-3 match to the Yellow Jackets. This Saturday  the Mountaineers will travel to the University of Houston-Victoria.

Southwestern spent the weekend in Abilene, facing two American Southwest Conference schools to continue non-conference play. The Pirates emerged 1-1 from play and move to 2-2 on the year. Three first half goals by UT Dallas were too much for the Pirates to recover from as they fell 3-1. SU rebounded well, however, with a 3-2 win over Hardin-Simmons. Southwestern trailed at the half but got big back-to-back goals in the second half before Kyle Allen scored the game winner. Southwestern remains on the road to open SCAC conference action on Tuesday, facing conference rival Trinity in San Antonio before traveling to Washington to face Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.

The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team jumped out front early Saturday afternoon and never looked back after a 2-0 home win over Concordia on Gustafson Field. Freshman Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) drew a foul inside the box and earned a penalty kick in just the sixth minute of action. The chance was taken and finished off by Isaac Lopez (Round Rock, Texas), who knocked the penalty kick into the lower corner to give the Bulldogs an early lead. Not long after, Lalo Ramirez (Round Rock, Texas) gave the Bulldogs a cushion by heading home a corner kick served up by Gabriel Sosa (Leaner, Texas). The goal came in the 19th minute and was Ramirez's third in as many matches. With the win, Texas Lutheran made it three straight to start the season, improving its record to 3-0. Concordia Texas dropped to 0-2 in the young season. The Bulldogs defense continued its run of strong form, tallying its second consecutive shutout. Through the season's first three matches, the Bulldogs have allowed just one goal.

No. 16 Trinity went 1-0-1 in its first road weekend of the season, taking a 2-1 decision over Hardin-Simmons, then playing UT-Dallas to a 1-1 draw. Hardin-Simmons got on the board first Friday night, but the Tigers scored the next two to take the victory. UT-Dallas put Trinity in a hole with a goal in the 79th minute, but Goncalo Santana netted his second goal of the weekend with just 1:13 remaining to set up overtime. Trinity will open SCAC play on Tuesday night, hosting Southwestern University at 7:30 p.m. The last time these two teams met was in the 2012 SCAC Tournament Championship game, resulting in a 2-0 victory for the Tigers. In the regular season, Trinity also won a 2-0 game on the road, but Southwestern scored a 2-2 draw in San Antonio.
