Men's Soccer Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern sits atop the SCAC Standings after knocking off Colorado College and following that up with a win over Dallas. Trinity also defeated Colorado College and Dallas to move into second place. Meanwhile, the Schreiner Mountaineers picked up their first SCAC win as they defeated Centenary.

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College men's soccer team put together a pair of outstanding defensive efforts as the 'Roos went 1-0-1 against Schreiner and Texas Lutheran, battling Schreiner to a 0-0 draw after two overtimes before topping Texas Lutheran 1-0 also in overtime. The 'Roos went more than 207 minutes without allowing a goal for the weekend. Austin College dominated possession, particularly in the second half against Schreiner, and held a 20 to 11 shot advantage but was unable to score. Andrew Celio made six saves in goal for the 'Roos. Celio made seven saves as the 'Roos shut out Texas Lutheran on Sunday, and the 'Roos got a game winner from Caleb Walters off of a free kick by Daniel Graham with just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime. The goal was the second of the season for Walters. This weekend the 'Roos head out on the road as they once again take on Schreiner and Texas Lutheran on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Centenary went 0-2 on the week with a pair of conferences losses to Texas Lutheran and Schreiner at Mayo Field. Kellan Klaus provided the lone, Gents goal of the season connecting on a shot in the 51st minute in the 3-1 decision to Schreiner. Rylan Whan totaled 20 saves for the week, including 11 in the setback to Schreiner. The freshman opened the weekend with nine saves against TLU in a 1-0 setback. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11 at Texas Lutheran.

When Colorado College scores the first goal of a game, it's usually a good sign for the Tigers. But not on Friday night. The Tigers saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Southwestern under the lights at Washburn Field. Despite a 23-9 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, a 1-0 lead turn into a one-goal deficit in a span of 11:05 early in the second half. Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie gave CC its only lead 21:35 into the contest when his header off a cross from senior forward Sean Parham. The Pirates tied the game in the 55th minute with the first goal allowed by the Tigers in conference play this season, ending a scoreless streak of 254:45. SU struck for the deciding goal in the 66th minute. Colorado College stayed even with Trinity for 45 minutes, but the visitors struck for four goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second half to record a 5-1 victory on Sunday. After TU took a 1-0 lead in the 19 minute, the Tigers drew even just 3:04 later when Parham got a head on freshman defender Christian Wulff's cross from the left edge of the box. Trinity took the lead for good 3:49 into the second half and added three more goals to put the game away. CC, which saw its 17-game home unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday night, lost back-to-back home games for the first time since 2010. The Tigers return to Texas this week for rematches with Southwestern on Friday night and Trinity on Sunday afternoon.

The University of Dallas men's soccer team (5-6-1, 1-5-1 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in conference action. On Friday in Irving, Texas, Trinity bested the Crusaders, 6-0. On Sunday, head coach David Hoffmann's squad was defeated 2-1 by Southwestern. Looking to orchestrate a comeback, junior midfielder Nathan Nwaeze scored with 1:03 remaining on an assist from sophomore midfielder Colton Allen. On the docket this week for Dallas are two conference road games -- Trinity (Friday, 7 p.m.); Southwestern (Sunday, 2 p.m.).

The Schreiner Mountaineers 1-0-1 on the week. On Friday, Schreiner traveled to Austin College and played to a 0-0 tie. At Centenary on Sunday, the Mountaineers got their first SCAC win with a 3-1  victory.  This week, Schreiner will host  on Friday and Centenary on Sunday.

Southwestern continues their outstanding start to conference play and with their two wins over the weekend are a perfect 7-0 and off to their best SCAC start ever. Friday, the Pirates traveled to Colorado Springs to take on Colorado College. The match didn't disappoint from what fans have come to expect when these two teams meet. CC took the lead early but it was all SU in the second half as the Pirates won 2-1. Against the University of Dallas on Sunday, Southwestern seized control just 11 minutes into the match and never looked back. The Pirates were seconds from the shutout, but UD scored with just 63 seconds left on the clock to put the final at 2-1. With the pair of wins Southwestern improves to 9-4 on the year and 7-0 in the SCAC. They begin the second half of the conference schedule this week, hosting two teams that will be eager for revenge in Colorado College and Dallas. 

A first-half goal from Lalo Ramirez was all the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team needed in its 1-0 shutout of Centenary on Friday night. Ramirez (Round Rock, Texas), a sophomore, scored what turned out to be the game's only goal in the 33rd minute. The game winner came off assists by Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) and Nathan Drouillard (San Antonio, Texas). The goal was Ramirez's fourth on the year. He certainly has had a flair for the dramatic and a propensity for coming up with goals when his team needs it the most. Friday's goal was his third game winner of the year. On Sunday, Texas Lutheran and Austin College battled to a 0-0 zero through regulation before the 'Roos won the game with an overtime goal in the 98th minute. The goal was the first given up by the Bulldogs in more than two games' worth of play after shutting out Centenary on Friday.

No. 23 Trinity scored a pair of road victories in SCAC play over the weekend, defeating both the University of Dallas and Colorado College.  The win over Colorado pushed Trinity into second place in the current SCAC standings, trailing Southwestern by just a game. Yuri Ribeiro has moved into the top 10 in school history in goals scored, netting the 34th of his career over the weekend.  Ribeiro is now in the top 10 in goals, assists, and points.  He needs six more points to become the eighth player to score 100 in a career, and he is also just four assists from becoming the third player ever at Trinity to score at least 30 goals and 30 assists in a career.  Matt Cardone also reached a career milestone, moving into a tie for third in school history in career saves (110). Trinity will host both Dallas and Colorado this weekend.  The Tigers face Dallas on Friday night, followed by a Sunday afternoon showdown with Colorado.
